Biography

  • Baroness (formed in 2003) is a progressive heavy metal band that is known for incorporating the intensity of punk metal and melodic flourishes of indie-rock, hailing from Savannah, Georgia, U.S.

Prior to the earliest incarnation of Baroness, lead singer and guitarist John Baizley, guitarist Tim Loose, bassist Summer Welch, drummer Allen Blickle had all been members of the punk/metal band Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks. Following a move to Savannah, Georgia from Lexington the band began writing new material and performing live to new audiences. In 2004 the group released their debut EP “First”, which was produced by Phillip Cope of Kylesa, as was their subsequent EP “Second” released Hyperrealist Records in 2005.

The record releases were well-received despite failing to significantly raise the profile of the band. That changed however in 2007 when Baroness released a split EP, “A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk”, with Savannah-based metal band Unpersons. As a result, Baroness signed with the revered independent label Relapse Records, who issued the band’s debut studio album, “Red Album” in September 2007. Earning widespread critical acclaim, once again produced by Phillip Cope of Kylesa, the record catapulted the band to national notoriety despite failing to make the charts.

Two years later Baroness issued their sophomore full-length album “Blue Record”, which was similarly extolled by the musical press. Debuting atop the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, the album has been dubbed the 20th Greatest Metal Album of all time by LA Weekly. Led by the single “Takes My Bones Away”, Baroness’ third full-length, “Yellow & Green”, arrived in July 2012. Peaking at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 and No. 85 on the UK Albums Chart, the critically acclaimed record saw the band raise their international profile to new heights.

Live reviews

  • Baroness

While touring following their 2012 release Yellow & Green, the band's bus careened off the road and into the woods outside of Bath, England. Suffering severe injuries, two band members made the decision to leave the band. Front man John Baizley chose to continue the band's touring presence after seven months following a letter addressed to his fans stating he would continue, "till the wheels fall off." Brandishing his scars and burns on both arms in triumph, he forever cemented his devotion for Baroness and his fans.

That display of passion is not found often these days, and it is certainly reflected in their performances. Seeing this band live in venue sizes that span the gambit, their shows always provide the same indomitable energy. Even on a Sunday night at the Lexington, VA natives drew a crowd that was dripping with anticipation. Amongst their performances of "Yellow & Green," ranked 6th Top Hard Rock Album in 2013, and past masterpieces, you could sense the deep respect amongst the fans for the band's perseverance in their craft. It adds another element to their shows, a certain deeply rooted belief in the true value of their music.

We were there for a reason. Not only to see Baroness, but to witness a phenomenon. Opening with "Take My Bones Away" and "March To The Sea," their sound almost itched for the luxury of a larger space. They carried us on a sonic journey, guiding us through sweeter melodies with a tang of grit, all the way to a heavier, thumping, and simply powerful encore. This band persists to follow their passion of live performance, and the crowd acknowledged that in the most genuine of ways. It is a truly special experience to see Baroness live when their performance is placed in the context of the bands eventful past.

  • I've been waiting to see these guys every since their Hopscotch appearance was cancelled due to the accident.

It was worth the wait. The entire show was great and the crowd participation was amazing. I think everyone figured the end of Chlorine and Wine would be epic with the whole room singing along and it did not disappoint!

I hope next time they come back to NC it is a slightly larger venue because I know a lot of people didn't get the chance to attend.

  • Been waiting a long time to see Baroness again. I saw them once off of the Red record in Albany NY and please come back soon! Had to travel to Northampton MA to see them but it was well worth it. Possibly the best and hottest show I've been to in 2016!! Looking forward to more. Loved the opener Pallbearer also.

  • Definitely a good show, though I would've wished for the singer to interact with the audience a bit more. But otherwise, the guitarist talked sometimes, talking about how they once recorded an album here in Dallas, which was a nice touch for the public to hear.

  • Baroness rules. They are one of the tightest bands that I've ever seen live. Their records are great, but nothing rivals their live shows. They are transcendent, hopeful, and still heavy as all get out. They look like they still love playing music.

  • We'll there was no concert as Brussels got attacked by some suicidal fucks. But your app didn't really get that, did it?

And as songkick requires a review that has at least 30 words long i'll just continue writing until I've reached the end

  • Pure intensity! The 45 minute set for this festival was the best all day. John is incredibly awesome and Baroness just killed it.

I will see them every time they are in Denver.
