Biography

  • The Colourist are a band hailing from Orange County, California, U.S who formed in 2009. Since their debut in 2013 they have released one studio album, three E.P’s and have made a strong name for themselves as one of the most exciting bands on California’s indie rock scene.

The origin of The Colourist comes from the dissolution of another band called Paper Thin Walls. Drummer Maya Tuttle and guitarist Adam Castilla fronted the group, and were determined to keep performing together. So they began searching for a new band to play in almost immediately after their previous bands demise. While they were going from audition to audition, guitarist Kollin Johannsen and bassist Justin Wager were putting together the first incarnation of what would later become The Colourist. After putting the word out that they were looking for a drummer and a guitarist, Castilla and Tuttle applied and almost as soon as the quartet played together, they knew that the band was formed.

Tuttle named the band after a conversation she had with a film student friend of hers, and the band hit the ground running, causing a huge stir in the Orange County indie rock scene. In fact before they’d even been performing together for a year they scored Best Live Band, Best New Artist and Best Song at the O.C Music Awards. For the next couple of years the band earned a steady living as the best kept secret of their local scene, but in July 2012 they managed to score a residency at Los Angeles’ Bootleg Theatre. Thanks to the label interest generated from those shows the band signed a record deal with Universal Republic Records, and released their debut E.P “Lido”, in August 2013. Ever since then the band have remained one of the most exciting indie rock bands around, and with a live act honed to perfection and a set of critically acclaimed releases to their name, The Colourist come highly recommended.

Live reviews

  • The Colourist

The show was amazing! I loved Mainland as the opener, although I wish they had gone after Field Mouse because they had higher energy than Field Mouse. The Colourist was amazing, they had great energy and interacted with the audience. The music was mostly from their album, but there were a few numbers that I hadn't heard because they haven't released them, which was really cool. The best part was definitely the last number, when everyone was singing along and it was a great end to an amazing concert. I also love that Jordan from Mainland and all of the members of The Colourist stuck around to talk to fans and sign things. It was a great experience!

  • The Coulourist show was great. They play all of their songs. They stayed after and we were able to get picture with them and they signed their poster. It was great night.

The Shelter venue in Detroit wasn't great it was difficult to see the bands.
