I wish my friend Laura could meet my friend Devin.

by michelle

Have you ever had two friends that you just know will get along because they get hyped over the same music? Laura first gave me Justice a way, way, way long time before I heard about it anywhere else. Devin just gave me Muscles. They both go totally nuts over that electronic-pop-thing and do all they can to keep my elderly finger on the pulse.

I’m sure someone more articulate could explain exactly what is going on in the musical atmosphere that’s creating the amazing pop irony that is Muscles and the rest of them in that whole Modular/Vice thing. But just to quote Muscles himself, “Hey girl. How do I say your name? Are you European? Are you Indian or African?” Just hear for yourself.

Gorgeous charts for rocking out

by michelle

Courtesy of artist Andrew Kuo’s blog, where you can see these amazing charts on concert experiences and music reviews. Here are some of my favorites, accompanied by music of course.

The Walkmen at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.
The Walkmen – What’s in it for Me?
“This is totally adult contemp.” Ahahaha! That’s hilarious and sooo on point!

Black Lips “Good Bad Not Evil”
Black Lips – M.I.A.
Well, too bad he thinks it’s mediocre because I really like Black Lips! Sure, a little bit of a throwback, but what’s not to love? And, I never the Vines were OK, even at the time. So there.

Battles’ Set at the South Street Seaport
Battles – Atlas
He’s right! Atlas is an EPIC track. The remixes and mashups with Atlas are double epic! There’s this Diplo mix floating around where he mixes it with M.I.A. and it’s in-fucking-credible. (Thanks, Devin.)

I wish he’d do a chart of my show-going experiences, which usually goes something like:
1. Oh damn, why did I come early for the opening band… Now the main act is starting and my legs are tired.
2. Ugh, no I don’t want to go up front! Now all these people hate us because we pushed past them. I’m so embarrassed.
3. Hell yeah! Amazing! I LOVE THIS SONG!
4. Shit, I just stepped on that dude’s foot because I was jumping up and down.
5. Why is that bitch whipping her head back and forth. Does she not realize it’s getting in my beer?
6. Oh snore. This song is boring.
7. OK, we get it. You know the words. You’re their biggest fan.
8. I’m too old for this. I’m depressed.
9. OH! I LOVE THAT COVER!!

The end.

I’ve seen them three times, and they get better each time.

I found this secret Arcade Fire site thanks to the Music Slut.

It’s mesmerizing.

Most waterlogged ham alive

by ian

Tony from Slutty Fringe put me on his gutterlist for The Whitest Boy Alive up in Hoxton last Monday. His blog is sick. You should check it out.

His review and John’s from H0tsauce are pretty amusing – A waterlogged ham pretty much sums it up.

I wish Erlend sang more, I really rate his voice.

Here are a couple of mp3s you can listen to in a spacious room by yourself.

The Whitest Boy Alive – Burning
Erlend Oye – Sheltered Life

The Wrecking Ball Doesn’t Speak French

by michelle

I finally got the newest Interpol. It’s so different, I’m very pleasantly surprised. There’s a more mature vulnerability that makes their sound warmer. I think they could write a really amazing musical. Their sound is so capacious and dramatic and emotional at the same time. Enough blah blah-ing from me.

Interpol – Wrecking Ball

My favorite Sunset Rubdown song has the best lyric with “wrecking ball.”

Sunset Rubdown – Us Ones In Between

I just discovered Malajube. Actually, I had my iTunes on shuffle, and it landed on an mp3 I downloaded from Pitchfork a year ago, but obviously never listened to because I failed to recognize its amazingness! They’re from Montreal, so they sing in French. Too bad I can’t understand a word of it. Pitchfork describes their sound as “of-the-moment,” which is exactly what it is. It’s like the amalgamation of every indie sound out there right now, while not being derivative. This intro, for example is pure Wolf Parade, but it quickly moves away from it.

Malajube – Fille à Plumes

And for another band who sings in French, may I hype my friend’s absolutely amazing band? Die Romantik met in high school in Paris, but now live in Brooklyn. Thanks for uneducated folk like me, they sing in English too. But here’s one in French.

Die Romantik – La Belle Musique De Chambre

Not because Paris Hilton is a musician or anything…

by michelle

But because I LOVE DAVID LETTERMAN! My mom always watched him every night, from way before the Tonight Show disappointment, and she always let me stay up until I saw the Top Ten list. I will always, always have a crush on him. Just watch this! I love him! You can totally tell this his revenge for the network forcing him to interview her. Thanks for I Guess I’m Floating for pointing it out and making me crack up tonight.
