What The Kids Are Listening To, #3: R&B/Hip-Hop

by brooke

I have to admit, I’m a little apprehensive about this week’s edition of What The Kids Are Listening To.  And not only because there are songs called ‘Sex Room’ and ‘Teach Me How To Dougie’.  Ripped straight from the R&B/Hip-Hop charts of Billboard Magazine, I haven’t heard of half of the artists, let alone the songs.  The other half are either Usher or Drake.  Maybe it’s just the thing to make us forget the rainy London day… enjoy!

What The Kids Are Listening To, #2: Country

Billboard arrived this morning, which means it’s time for this week’s edition of What The Kids Are Listening To!  Since we might all die if we have to listen to the same Usher and Katy Perry songs every week, I’ve opted to rotate through the genre charts.  This week: country!!

Sitting in uber-hipster East London, listening to the country charts will undoubtably feel as out of place as a lost ball in a high weed (obligatory Southern expression), and I’m fully expecting comments akin to “what is a Taylor Swift”.  Once again, these are the first 20 songs from Billboard’s country chart that were on Spotify — enjoy!

Admittedly, we can be music snobs.  After all, who doesn’t enjoy being a little self-righteous about their music taste?  In an effort to understand the ‘Belieber’ generation, we’ve instituted a weekly “What The Kids Are Listening To” music hour at Songkick.  For today’s inaugural playlist (strategically played after lunchtime so there was no excuse to escape) we listened to the latest auto-tuned sensations amidst comments from the developers like “Can we stop scrobbling for this hour?”, and “this is like hanging out in a small town McDonald’s carpark drinking Spumante”.  I think they secretly liked it.

On the music player this week was the first 20 songs from the Billboard Hot 100 that were available on Spotify.  For a little pop trivia, 5 of the top 11 on the Hot 100 are songs written by songwriter and producer “Dr. Luke”, which is maybe why they sound pretty similar.
