Black Cab Sessions hit the USA

by Emily

Black Cab Sessions should be a staple viewing for any live music fan. If not, which rock have you been hiding under this whole time?!

They’ve recently taken the format State-side and have a series on Channel 4 to showcase the musical journey across the country. It airs tonight at 12.10am, and will be available to watch on 4oD from the following week.

For those not in the know, they basically have the “best bands performing in one of the worlds most iconic vehicles” – a London Black Cab which drives around the capital. The sessions are then streamed over on their website right here.

(as a quick intro, there’s a handy ‘best-of’ list over on the Guardian by their director)

Such a simple idea, but such an awesome concept. Having great bands performing in what is a pretty confined space means that there’s a whole new level of focus on the music and talent.

Don’t miss it, it looks epic:

Wildbirds + Peacedrums to perform in a boat, on a roof…really.

by Emily

A Room for London – a one-bedroom installation overlooking the River Thames – have announced a series of unique concerts for 2012.

Sounds From A Room will see a variety of artists performing in a boat, perched in what looks like a rather precarious location, on the roof of Queen Elizabeth Hall. The performances are then streamed through their website, and by live relay to a giant screen downstairs in the Southbank Centre.

Bands in a boat, on a roof…sounds like a weird dream, but anything that breaks the mould and switches up the standard concert format is good in our eyes, plus it’s free so even more reason to check it out!

The schedule so far looks like this:

25 March / Laurie Anderson
26 April / Wildbirds & Peacedrums
23 May / Amadou & Mariam

…with more artists to be announced soon. For more information, head over to the website.

Andrew Bird was the last artist to perform in the room, you can check out his performance here.

Share a breakfast bagel with The Drums

by Elliot

On March 1st at 8am, The Drums will be serenading breakfasting Londoners at the Floridita cafe in Soho.

Whether you’re lying in bed, in the shower or on your way into work, there’s nothing more essential than a catchy, sunny-side-up tune to get you going in the morning. So make sure you head over that way if you’re looking for an early a.m. pick-me-up!

The show, organised by The New York Bakery Company, is free; just send an email to thedrums@breakfastbagels.com to be in with a chance of attending.

Bagels, OJ and Brooklyn surf-pop… does it get any better?

We have a bumper selection of new shows for you this week, all on sale today! (Feb 24)

UK

 Jay-Z & Kanye West / UK & European Tour / 20 May – 13 June

Do not adjust your sets. After weeks of speculation, we can finally confirm that the emperors of hip-hop are coming to the UK and Europe for a gargantuan arena tour in May and June. Jay-Z and Kanye West will bring their ‘Watch The Throne’ show to London’s O2 Arena on May 20th21st and 22nd. Dates across Europe will follow, including two nights at the Palais Omnisports de Paris Bercy, before wrapping up (pun intended) with a handful of shows in Manchester and Birmingham. If this isn’t the most hotly anticipated tour of the year, we’d love to know what is! Tickets go on sale for the UK shows tomorrow morning, don’t hang about.

LONDON

Teenage Cancer Trust Concerts / Royal Albert Hall, London / 28 March – 3 April

A pedigree selection of shows have been announced as part of Teenage Cancer Trust’s annual residency at the Royal Albert Hall. Seven consecutive evenings will see five-star performances from the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Florence & The Machine, Pulp, Paul Weller, Jessie J and more. The shows benefit a great cause, and the venue alone is spectacular. Check out the full schedule here, and have your credit cards ready at 9.30am GMT!

NEW YORK

The Governor’s Ball 2012 / Randall’s Island, New York / 23 June – 24 June

The line-up for this year’s Governor’s Ball festival was released this week, and oh boy it’s a good one. Beck and Passion Pit top the bill, followed closely by Modest Mouse, Chromeo, Santigold, Major Lazer, Duck Sauce and Explosions In The Sky to name but a few. What’s more, the two day event will see LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy take to the decks with partner in crime Pat Mahoney as ‘Special Disco Version’. And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s a slot left on Sunday’s billing for a mystery guest. Your guess is as good as ours. Tickets and ferry passes go on general sale tomorrow!

USA

Fiona Apple / US Tour / 19 March – 27 March

She’s only played a handful of shows since 2007, but singer-songwriter Fiona Apple is jumping straight back into the live music circuit following her headline appearance at the Pitchfork Showcase at SXSW in March. Dates are confirmed in Chicago, DC, New York (twice), Atlantic City and Boston, with the huge promise of long-awaited new material. Tickets available, you guessed it, tomorrow!

Music of The Rolling Stones at Carnegie Hall, New York

by Elliot

Any live music fan can recount that feeling when the jaw-dropping show of the year is announced. The disbelief,  the adrenaline – it’s an emotion trumped only by attending the concert itself. So you can imagine the shockwaves that resonated across the globe late last year when an extra special tribute show was announced at Carnegie Hall.

48 years since The Rolling Stones played Carnegie Hall themselves, 21 artists from around the world are coming together to perform the 21 tracks from the Stones’ greatest hits record, ‘Hot Rocks’.

The pedigree line-up includes TV On The Radio, Art Garfunkel, Marianne Faithfull, Rickie Lee Jones, Ronnie Spector and The Mountain Goats.

What’s more, proceeds from the event will go to worthy causes in and around New York City (more information can be found on the official website).

There are still a handful of tickets left for the event on March 13th, so if your love for the Stones still burns strong, get in there quick.

We’re hoping a prize will be awarded at the end of the evening for the best Jagger impression.
