On the review front we’ve got mellowdoubt leading the way, followed by many close ties between newcomers (nathanray, daz, FruitierThanThou, Gizmad) and regular site contributors. Choosing a pick of the best out of 46 from mellowdoubt is a toughy, but here’s a couple… (worth a browse through his extensive gigography to sample some of the rest!)

Franz Ferdinand with The Rakes and Editors, Brighton Centre (15 Nov 2005):

“As expected the Franz Ferdinand/Editors/The Rakes triple header in Brighton was marvellous! I shall attempt to track down a set-list in due course but my personal highlights included.

- Alan Donohoe (frontman of The Rakes) “unique” dancing and a really wired and Wire-y sounding version of “We Are All Animals”
- Editors somehow topping their performance in Loughborough from the other month.
- A manic version of “Outsiders” in which Paul Thompson was joined on the drums by Andy Knowles (Franz’s touring keyboard/misc. instrument player) and a random technician.
- A sledgehammer trio of “Take Me Out”, “Darts Of Pleasure” and “The Fallen” mid-way into the set (you know the band’s at the top of their game when they can leave these songs out of the encore).
- Bob actually talking to the crowd (Alex Kapranos – “see he does talk”).

All in all this was far and away the best gig i’ve been to in 2005 and i’d even class it amongst my all time top five. If you have tickets to any of the remaining dates you’re really in for a treat. I really can’t enthuse enough about how excellent all three bands are not only live but on record too.”

Arcade Fire with Electrelane, Brixton Academy (17 March 2007):

“The Arcade Fire concert at Brixton Academy was a quasi-religious experience. The only downside to the whole evening… annoying people who talked all the way through the Arcade Fire’s set, couples invading my personal space to take souvenir snaps of themselves at every opportunity instead of watching the band and errr that’s it. Yes, i’m turning into a grumpy old man.”

daz recounts his first punk gig experience:

The Damned, Smartyz (09 April 1979):

“This was my first evr proper punk band gig. I was 16 and lucky to get in as the gig was packed to the rafters in a tiny club, that only held 300. for once the bouncers were being picky about who they let in. When the gig finaly started the band just blew me head off! I mean at Erics in Liverpool you got close up to a band, but here you were litterally in touching distance if you were at the front. The club wasnt used to big name bands here and the band could only put outhalf there P.A. with Rat Scabies having to set up his drum kit in the DJ’s booth at the side. (DJ relegated to the rear)”

“The first Tomohawk show in London. Police get up. Patton on form as ever, baiting the security. Caused a bit of trouble when he seemingly came out for the encore then pissed all over the first few rows. I caught a splash myself. Turns out it was prosthesis and simulation. Jockstrap was the highight for me.”

Drsimonc shares anecdotes from his diaries written in the 1970s/80s – such a nice idea for keeping hold of those gig memories:

The Damned with The Ruts at Locarno (17 Jun 79): “I remember this well due to the trouble i got into getting out late – we arrived late (bus to Bristol) and had to queue until at least 9pm. Went with David (Butch) and Lawrence. Problem was my parents were collecting us and we had to leave the gig early to meet them. ‘Ruts ace and Damned a bit prattish’ I recorded, ‘back at 11.45′. Next day, ‘no school in morning’. Four stars for the Ruts.”

Siouxsie and the Banshees with The Human League (12 Oct 78): “…it was fantastic, never seen anything like the Human League at that time and never heard anything like Spizzoil. Diary says: ‘Went to see S and B in even at Pavilion, also Human League – not v good – and Spizzoli – better. Went punked up.’ (?! wish we had some pictures).”

Happy Mondays at Wembley Arena:

“The Mondays’ performances were so unrecognisably shambolic that the person behind us shouting for ‘Mad Cyril’ continued to do so even after they’d played it. The tickets were competition prizes so we didn’t care.

Can’t remember 808 State being there, but MC Buzz B was, and he was utterly, pathetically crap.”

Queen at Knebworth, 1989:

“All of Queen’s set bar Brian May’s guitar solo was amazing; in particular, 120,000 pairs of hands doing the ‘Radio Ga Ga’ clapping and, afterwards, rounding a corner to see thousands of people swarming down a hillside.

God knows what Belouis Some (the opener) was doing on the same bill as Queen and Status Quo. He was crap and hid behind his backing singers when bottles started flying. Quo were alright and Big Country were pretty good.”

Get stuck in!

As the site has grown we’ve built up a great bunch of loyal Songkickers, who not only contribute tons of helpful ideas, but who’ve also really grasped what Songkick is all about. From Soapcompany, who’s personal gigography has now surpassed the 1,000 mark, to ghbradshaw, who’s added 1646 photos and counting since he signed up – there’s a whole host of dedicated live music fans who are helping make Songkick the home of live music online.

So, to extend our thanks we invited you along to our offices for a bit of a shindig on Friday 9th October… and we were very happy with the turnout!

Almost 30 if you came along and it was great to finally put those names to some faces. For any of you who couldn’t make it, here’s a quick summary of what went down…

First up we had a bit of a meet and greet: Anika (Anikainlondon), one of our interns, very kindly hand-drew everyone name badges which was a great help when it came to figuring out who was who:

Once the beer had started to flow and we’d established which username belonged to which person, we pulled out a little icebreaker to get everyone moving around the room (I feel like I’m making this sound like speed-dating for music geeks – it wasn’t like that, honest). This took the form of a ‘Wordle’ – we looked through everyone’s gigographies to see which gigs people had been to together and then displayed it like this…

…to show who’d been to the most gigs with who out of everyone there. We also gave everyone a list of said gigs, prompting conversations along the lines of “wow we’ve been to so many shows together”, “how good was that gig?!”, “how weird that you went to see so and so…”. It was a music nerd’s dream.

When everyone had circulated the room an acceptable amount of times (and grabbed another cake along the way), it was time for the Songkick Team to say a few words. After a quick introduction from each team member, Michelle took the lead and gave, what we hope, was an insightful glimpse into the future plans for Songkick. A question and answer style session ensued and then we let everyone lose on two blank whiteboards to share their feedback:

Judging by the great responses we’ve had from all those who attended (and the fact that the party moved on to the pub after), I think it’s safe to say that the evening was a great success, so we’ll certainly be doing it again at some point in the near future!

“So good that I didn’t mind getting a nosebleed in the middle. If you’re going to have gore dripping down your mouth then it might as well be at a Cure gig and, since they played for over three hours, it didn’t matter that I spent 20 mins with my head tilted back (possibly freaking out the folks behind us).”

…and KillTheRobotz shares a great review of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson explaining how the “controversial” performance went down:

“Norman Oklahoma is not the place you’d expect to see Marilyn Manson and NIN – the bible belt is very conservative and restrictive to the point of being oppressive [...] this generated so much interest it prompted throngs of ticketless religious people to show up in the parking lot just to see the spectacle, some held picket signs! Never seen that before.”

He also gives a nice insight into watching one of his favourite artists, Beck:

“Seeing one of your musical heroes play live can go one of 2 ways, it’s either an amazing experience that reminds you why you bother going to gigs or a huge disappointment that was never going to live up to massive expectations. I’m glad to say that tonight fell into the first category.”

Very true.

And bumblebee makes her third appearance in a row, regaling us with more Kaiser Chief tales and Cribs shenanigans.

Singer/songwriter kevinhewick of Factory Records fame, is a new user we’re particularly excited to have on the site. He shares some priceless anecdotes from gigs such as The Clash…

“The Clash were on explosive form, the myth you dream of now, there it was.. afterwards they came out and met the fans going to different corners of the venue, Kings Hall staff ordering us out and everybody refusing to go and Mick Jones was like “Cool it, we’re just talking to our friends” – fans were called friends, those WERE the days!”

ghbradshaw has also done a good job of sharing physical setlists, possibly trumping seewhatyouhear by getting a signed one from Dogs Die In Hot Cars:

shivadescending continues to boost the historical content adding more Cabaret Voltaire setlists and some more classic eighties content in the shape of New Order.

Amount of reviews added has not been as impressive as last week  – come on Songkickers share your thoughts with those not lucky enough to have attended! But bumblebee, hungoverdrawn and Triturus have still done a good job…

bumblebee (possibly the biggest Kaiser Chiefs fan on Songkick having seen them 75 times and counting!) gives an honest 1 out of 5 rating to one of their German shows.

And hungoverdrawn continues to amuse with his short but sweet anecdotes of gigs gone by:

“The Darkness were, as ever “rocktastic” (as I wrote at the time). A photographer from Dazed & Confused took my picture, because I was wearing a hand-made T-shirt Justin had given me (it was never printed though).”

It’s been an awesome week for photos with duanos00 and ghbradshaw adding 1,258 between them – thanks guys!! Following on from last week,  duanos00 shares even more great Reading content, as well as some cool shots from a recent Lemonheads gig (which pleased our very own Pete as he didn’t have his camera at this gig!).

ghbradshaw has had a very busy week adding a ton of great photos including ticket stubs, setlists and a host of awesome shots featuring the likes of Muse, Electric Six and Super Furry Animals.

And shivadescending has added loads more fascinating old gems from the eighties such as this:

xneverwherex shared her videos of British bands White Lies and Friendly Fires playing at New York’s intimate Bowery Ballroom and iheartmusic added a video of the super-talented Lykke Li plus a whole host of other musical treats (698 in total!!). While Ketter added videos of Dutch singer Ilse DeLange.
