We started up the weekly Top Contributor post to highlight all the great content that you guys have been adding and show our appreciation. Behind the scenes though, there’s another load of dedicated Songkick regulars who help massively with getting our data up to scratch by sending in feedback through our Flag a Problem link. So a huge thanks goes out to the following for being so eagle-eyed and passionate:

Tom309 has shared lots of gig memories, including Simple Minds:

“the enthusiasm of the crowd there was off the charts. the people on the floor were jumping up and down so much it was like the floor was made of rubber. was in section 05, row O, seat 70″

While julian181163 shares a tale of an early Sex Pistols gig:

“Went to this small club next to Nottingham Forest’s ground, with a much older friend, by luck, not by design. Only knew one song: “Substitute” by The Who. 12-15 people there. Apparently my pal had read about them in the NME (or a similar paper). I am ashamed to say that I can’t even remember my pals name.”

This week, hats off to mellowdoubt again for all the awesome content he’s been adding, including a ton of reviews, loads more setlists and some great posters. There’s also some interesting photos to browse through from encosion and nathanray. Plus (not directly related to the leaderboards, but this has got to be shared)…. Pandalucia, who came third on this weeks Review leaderboard, has been busy adding her mahusive gigography which reveals her mighty impressive love for Radiohead – she’s seen them nearly 100 times!

Setlists

1) mellowdoubt – 43
2) nathanray – 14
3) whichway - 13

So, many more setlists added this week from mellowdoubt, including Blur at Glastonbury 1994…

… The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and The Smiths.

nathanray added setlists from the 1991 Lollapalooza festival:

And amongst those added by whichway, there’s James with The Happy Mondays and Little Boots.

Reviews

1) mellowdoubt – 46
2) MilkLizard82, daz, nathanray, FruitierThanThou, encosion - 5
3 ) Gizmad, Pandalucia, QB – 4

On the review front we’ve got mellowdoubt leading the way, followed by many close ties between newcomers (nathanray, daz, FruitierThanThou, Gizmad) and regular site contributors. Choosing a pick of the best out of 46 from mellowdoubt is a toughy, but here’s a couple… (worth a browse through his extensive gigography to sample some of the rest!)

Franz Ferdinand with The Rakes and Editors, Brighton Centre (15 Nov 2005):

“As expected the Franz Ferdinand/Editors/The Rakes triple header in Brighton was marvellous! I shall attempt to track down a set-list in due course but my personal highlights included.

- Alan Donohoe (frontman of The Rakes) “unique” dancing and a really wired and Wire-y sounding version of “We Are All Animals”
- Editors somehow topping their performance in Loughborough from the other month.
- A manic version of “Outsiders” in which Paul Thompson was joined on the drums by Andy Knowles (Franz’s touring keyboard/misc. instrument player) and a random technician.
- A sledgehammer trio of “Take Me Out”, “Darts Of Pleasure” and “The Fallen” mid-way into the set (you know the band’s at the top of their game when they can leave these songs out of the encore).
- Bob actually talking to the crowd (Alex Kapranos – “see he does talk”).

All in all this was far and away the best gig i’ve been to in 2005 and i’d even class it amongst my all time top five. If you have tickets to any of the remaining dates you’re really in for a treat. I really can’t enthuse enough about how excellent all three bands are not only live but on record too.”

Arcade Fire with Electrelane, Brixton Academy (17 March 2007):

“The Arcade Fire concert at Brixton Academy was a quasi-religious experience. The only downside to the whole evening… annoying people who talked all the way through the Arcade Fire’s set, couples invading my personal space to take souvenir snaps of themselves at every opportunity instead of watching the band and errr that’s it. Yes, i’m turning into a grumpy old man.”

daz recounts his first punk gig experience:

The Damned, Smartyz (09 April 1979):

“This was my first evr proper punk band gig. I was 16 and lucky to get in as the gig was packed to the rafters in a tiny club, that only held 300. for once the bouncers were being picky about who they let in. When the gig finaly started the band just blew me head off! I mean at Erics in Liverpool you got close up to a band, but here you were litterally in touching distance if you were at the front. The club wasnt used to big name bands here and the band could only put outhalf there P.A. with Rat Scabies having to set up his drum kit in the DJ’s booth at the side. (DJ relegated to the rear)”

After an unintentional hiatus last week (we were super busy working on our new Contact Importer/Friend Finder) – this week will be a bumper edition. Leaderboards are for the past fortnight so that all the newly added goodness is acknowledged!

Let’s see who’s added the most of each category this fortnight:

Setlists

1. mellowdoubt – 127

First up setlists – a massive thanks has to go out to mellowdoubt for the staggering 147 setlists he’s added. This includes a ton of iLikeTrains setlists to browse through, something to take you back to the increasingly distant memories of the festival season and this 2000 Pulp setlist from Reading:

3. eskimowoman – 5

Review-wise, MilkLizard82 shares tales from Weezer, The Dandy Warhols and this charming tale from a Tomahawk show at the now no-more Astoria:

“The first Tomohawk show in London. Police get up. Patton on form as ever, baiting the security. Caused a bit of trouble when he seemingly came out for the encore then pissed all over the first few rows. I caught a splash myself. Turns out it was prosthesis and simulation. Jockstrap was the highight for me.”

Drsimonc shares anecdotes from his diaries written in the 1970s/80s – such a nice idea for keeping hold of those gig memories:

The Damned with The Ruts at Locarno (17 Jun 79): “I remember this well due to the trouble i got into getting out late – we arrived late (bus to Bristol) and had to queue until at least 9pm. Went with David (Butch) and Lawrence. Problem was my parents were collecting us and we had to leave the gig early to meet them. ‘Ruts ace and Damned a bit prattish’ I recorded, ‘back at 11.45′. Next day, ‘no school in morning’. Four stars for the Ruts.”

Siouxsie and the Banshees with The Human League (12 Oct 78): “…it was fantastic, never seen anything like the Human League at that time and never heard anything like Spizzoil. Diary says: ‘Went to see S and B in even at Pavilion, also Human League – not v good – and Spizzoli – better. Went punked up.’ (?! wish we had some pictures).”

So as mentioned, there’s an abundance of Morrissey setlists from mellowdoubt, including this 2006 one from Alexandra Palace:

duanos00 added the setlist from last Fridays Sonic Youth gig as well as a load of Smashing Pumpkins ones, including this one from the 1992 Reading Festival. While iheartmusic has also added some physical setlists, such as this one from a 2002 Something Corporate gig:

It’s, sadly, been fairly quiet on the review front this week – but BrunoMac has continued to add more priceless short but sweet anecdotes of his past gig experiences:

Happy Mondays at Wembley Arena:

“The Mondays’ performances were so unrecognisably shambolic that the person behind us shouting for ‘Mad Cyril’ continued to do so even after they’d played it. The tickets were competition prizes so we didn’t care.

Can’t remember 808 State being there, but MC Buzz B was, and he was utterly, pathetically crap.”

Queen at Knebworth, 1989:

“All of Queen’s set bar Brian May’s guitar solo was amazing; in particular, 120,000 pairs of hands doing the ‘Radio Ga Ga’ clapping and, afterwards, rounding a corner to see thousands of people swarming down a hillside.

God knows what Belouis Some (the opener) was doing on the same bill as Queen and Status Quo. He was crap and hid behind his backing singers when bottles started flying. Quo were alright and Big Country were pretty good.”

Here at Songkick we’ve always been really grateful for feedback from you guys – the good, the bad and the ugly – we’ve heard it all and genuinely appreciate the time people have spent letting us know what works and what doesn’t.

As the site has grown we’ve built up a great bunch of loyal Songkickers, who not only contribute tons of helpful ideas, but who’ve also really grasped what Songkick is all about. From Soapcompany, who’s personal gigography has now surpassed the 1,000 mark, to ghbradshaw, who’s added 1646 photos and counting since he signed up – there’s a whole host of dedicated live music fans who are helping make Songkick the home of live music online.

So, to extend our thanks we invited you along to our offices for a bit of a shindig on Friday 9th October… and we were very happy with the turnout!

Almost 30 if you came along and it was great to finally put those names to some faces. For any of you who couldn’t make it, here’s a quick summary of what went down…

First up we had a bit of a meet and greet: Anika (Anikainlondon), one of our interns, very kindly hand-drew everyone name badges which was a great help when it came to figuring out who was who:

Photo taken by Brooke Parrott

(check out Anika’s blog here: http://anikainlondon.wordpress.com/)

Once the beer had started to flow and we’d established which username belonged to which person, we pulled out a little icebreaker to get everyone moving around the room (I feel like I’m making this sound like speed-dating for music geeks – it wasn’t like that, honest). This took the form of a ‘Wordle’ – we looked through everyone’s gigographies to see which gigs people had been to together and then displayed it like this…

a_gun_racks’s wordle

…to show who’d been to the most gigs with who out of everyone there. We also gave everyone a list of said gigs, prompting conversations along the lines of “wow we’ve been to so many shows together”, “how good was that gig?!”, “how weird that you went to see so and so…”. It was a music nerd’s dream.

When everyone had circulated the room an acceptable amount of times (and grabbed another cake along the way), it was time for the Songkick Team to say a few words. After a quick introduction from each team member, Michelle took the lead and gave, what we hope, was an insightful glimpse into the future plans for Songkick. A question and answer style session ensued and then we let everyone lose on two blank whiteboards to share their feedback:

Photo taken by Brooke Parrott

We’ll be sifting our way through that soon!

Judging by the great responses we’ve had from all those who attended (and the fact that the party moved on to the pub after), I think it’s safe to say that the evening was a great success, so we’ll certainly be doing it again at some point in the near future!

We’d love to hear more feedback from those who came though – let us know in the comment section below what you thought of the evening and if you have any ideas for the next one

Thanks again to all those who came, and to Brooke (bookarooble) and Simon (gtvone) for the photography.

Gumgum2804 has continued to add a bunch of really readable reviews, covering performances from Foals, Mark Ronson and Eagles of Death Metal.

BrunoMac shares some of his experiences of seeing The Cure…

“So good that I didn’t mind getting a nosebleed in the middle. If you’re going to have gore dripping down your mouth then it might as well be at a Cure gig and, since they played for over three hours, it didn’t matter that I spent 20 mins with my head tilted back (possibly freaking out the folks behind us).”

…and KillTheRobotz shares a great review of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson explaining how the “controversial” performance went down:

“Norman Oklahoma is not the place you’d expect to see Marilyn Manson and NIN – the bible belt is very conservative and restrictive to the point of being oppressive [...] this generated so much interest it prompted throngs of ticketless religious people to show up in the parking lot just to see the spectacle, some held picket signs! Never seen that before.”

On the poster front, shivadescending is still contributing a ton of interesting old posters, such as this 1980s Q-Tip one:

Hot on the heels of our user meet-up session (blog post on that to come in the next few days!), this weeks Top Contributor post features some, now, familiar faces as well as a couple of new users.

Regular top contributor iheartmusic continues to do a great job of adding awesome content – appearing in no less than three of this weeks categories. Then there’s new user Gumgum2804 who’s been busy adding some really interesting and detailed reviews – good skills!

Here’s the breakdown of who’s been adding the most of each thing this week…

Setlists

1) iheartmusic – 19
2) xneverwherex – 19
3) Gumgum2804 – 11

iheartmusic has added many gems, including an Interpol setlist (featuring an photo of the original to boot)

Anyone Interpol fans out there know what the last song ending in D could be?!

xneverwherex has been equally active on the setlist front and added this Ash setlist from 2003…

…as well as some more Interpol setlists (perhaps that last unknown song could be ‘Roland’, if this one’s anything to go by.

Reviews

1) Gumgum2804 – 20
2) bumblebee - 11
3) kevinhewick – 6

On the review front Gumgum2804 has added some great high quality stuff (with setlists added for many as well), he gives a really detailed description of the shows, worth checking out are this one of the Manic Street Preachers and this of the recently reformed Skunk Anansie. He also gives a nice insight into watching one of his favourite artists, Beck:

“Seeing one of your musical heroes play live can go one of 2 ways, it’s either an amazing experience that reminds you why you bother going to gigs or a huge disappointment that was never going to live up to massive expectations. I’m glad to say that tonight fell into the first category.”

Very true.

And bumblebee makes her third appearance in a row, regaling us with more Kaiser Chief tales and Cribs shenanigans.

Singer/songwriter kevinhewick of Factory Records fame, is a new user we’re particularly excited to have on the site. He shares some priceless anecdotes from gigs such as The Clash…

“The Clash were on explosive form, the myth you dream of now, there it was.. afterwards they came out and met the fans going to different corners of the venue, Kings Hall staff ordering us out and everybody refusing to go and Mick Jones was like “Cool it, we’re just talking to our friends” – fans were called friends, those WERE the days!”

…New Order and The Cramps! Well worth checking out his gigography too.

Photos

1) ghbradshaw – 217
2) dcampus – 169
3) gtvone – 75

ghbradshaw holds on to the top spot (1450 and counting in total) and shows no signs of slowing down – apparently there’s lots more still to come! This week he’s added some recent Super Furry Animal shots:

And some 2005 Mars Volta and Elbow shots.

dcampus makes it onto the leaderboard for the fisrt time, adding a bunch of photos from a variety of gigs including Metallica, AC/DC and this great action shot from a New Found Glory show:

gtvone shares some of his brilliant concert photography with us, such as this perfectly-timed one of Hilltop Hoods at the Islington Academy:

It’s that time of week again folks: who’s been a setlist nerd? Who’s beaten the record for most photos uploaded ever? Who’s whiled away an evening (or perhaps a day at work for any skivers out there) scouring YouTube for the best music videos? All will be revealed right here!
Here goes…

It’s that time of week again folks: who’s been a setlist nerd? Who’s beaten the record for most photos uploaded ever? Who’s whiled away an evening (or perhaps a day at work for any skivers out there) scouring YouTube for the best music videos? All will be revealed right here!

Here goes…

Setlists

1) seewhatyouhear – 27
2) deathwarmedover – 16
3) +++jcm+++ – 12

seewhatyouhear holds on to his title for the second week running – he’s been adding setlists from all over the place including a Joanna Newsom one from Czech Republic and an Andrew Bird one from Michigan, US.

deathwarmedover has also been busy adding lots of Elliot Smith setlists, such as this 1998 one from a performance at the legendary La Cigale, Paris:

And +++jcm+++ has added a bunch of great stuff from concerts in Eugene, OR, US (which has put a big smile on Songkick team member Brooke’s face as that’s her home town!) including posters as well as setlists.

Reviews

1) Brightslumber – 12
2) sprouty70 – 8
3) bumblebee – 7

On the review front this week, we’ve had Brightslumber add his two cents to this ongoing debate about the Victoria Park Radiohead concert, while sprouty70 looks back on some classic Milton Keynes Bowl gigs from the eighties:

“Another hot day, very drunk on cider, security cut bottle tops on way in so had to drink quickly, Mamas boys ok, magnum great, cider asleep for most of gary moore – parisenne walkways awesome, jethro tull asleep, Marillion fantastic – did misplaced childhood complete – only problem volume not loud enough – great day tho!”

And bumblebee shares her experiences of meeting Maximo Park as well as an insight into how her love affair with the Kaiser Chiefs started.

Photos

1) ghbradshaw – 193
2) Brightslumber – 152
3) hungoverdrawn – 76

193 photos takes ghbradshaw not only to the top of this weeks leader-board, but also to the position of adding the most photos out of all Songkickers…ever! That means with a total of 1223 he’s taken the crown away from Duanos00 (who was last weeks champ with 1195 in total). Amongst this impressive count of photos there are many gems to be found, such as this, rather youthful, one of the Arctic Monkeys:

Thanks Gareth!

Brightslumber gets his second mention on todays post for adding 152 photos, including some great atmospheric shots of Au Revoir Simone at the beautiful Union Chapel:

And hungoverdrawn shares some interesting old shots from nineties band Kenickie:

Ahh look at Lauren Laverne…

Posters

1) +++jcm+++ – 90
2) mattisnotfrench – 35
3) fgowner – 15

On the poster front +++jcm+++ leads the way with his Eugene posters, as mentioned earlier…

mattisnotfrench makes an appearance on the Top contributor post for the third week in a row thanks to all the great Soundgarden posters his been adding. Cheers Matt

Videos

1) manishpuri – 96
2) iheartmusic – 62
3) mattisnotfrench – 25

And lastly for videos, we see manishpuri knocking iheartmusic (a permanent fixture on the video leaderboard – thanks Shara!) off the top-spot. He’s been adding tons of cool stuff including videos from Thom Yorke and some great Portishead ones from 1997.

Thanks to everyone mentioned and also to those who didn’t quite make the top three, but who’ve been adding equally cool stuff!

Until next time…

Last week we introduced the weekly Top contributor leader-board which highlighted you guys who had added the most content, and cherry-picked some of the most interesting items added. All in all it seemed to go down pretty well, so here’s round two!

This week sees duanos00 holding on to his crown as king of the photos (a staggering 1196 in total making him the user to have added the most photos since we launched in June!). ghbradshaw is hot on his heels though, featuring heavily on this weeks Top contributor list.

Let’s break it down then:

Setlists

1) seewhatyouhear – 47
2) ghbradshaw – 37
3) shivadescending – 34

seewhatyouhear managed to swipe the actual setlist itself from the Girls gig at the Lexington last Monday:

And also added a whole bunch of Animal Collective setlists including this Belfast show.

ghbradshaw has also done a good job of sharing physical setlists, possibly trumping seewhatyouhear by getting a signed one from Dogs Die In Hot Cars:

shivadescending continues to boost the historical content adding more Cabaret Voltaire setlists and some more classic eighties content in the shape of New Order.

Reviews

1) bumblebee – 7
2) hungoverdrawn – 7
3) Triturus – 6

Amount of reviews added has not been as impressive as last week – come on Songkickers share your thoughts with those not lucky enough to have attended! But bumblebee, hungoverdrawn and Triturus have still done a good job…

bumblebee (possibly the biggest Kaiser Chiefs fan on Songkick having seen them 75 times and counting!) gives an honest 1 out of 5 rating to one of their German shows.

And hungoverdrawn continues to amuse with his short but sweet anecdotes of gigs gone by:

“The Darkness were, as ever “rocktastic” (as I wrote at the time). A photographer from Dazed & Confused took my picture, because I was wearing a hand-made T-shirt Justin had given me (it was never printed though).”

Photos

1) duanos00 – 683
2) ghbradshaw – 575
3) shivadescending – 123

It’s been an awesome week for photos with duanos00 and ghbradshaw adding 1,258 between them – thanks guys!! Following on from last week, duanos00 shares even more great Reading content, as well as some cool shots from a recent Lemonheads gig (which pleased our very own Pete as he didn’t have his camera at this gig!).

ghbradshaw has had a very busy week adding a ton of great photos including ticket stubs, setlists and a host of awesome shots featuring the likes of Muse, Electric Six and Super Furry Animals.

And shivadescending has added loads more fascinating old gems from the eighties such as this:

Oh to have been around for that kind of line-up (and at that bargain price…)!

Posters

1) ghbradshaw – 22
2) shivadescending – 15
From setlists added right after the concert (hats off to you Temporaryism) to ticket stubs dating back to the 80s (go Triturus) – it’s been great to watch the site grow just like we hoped it would.

So, to show our appreciation and get you dedicated contributors noticed, we thought it’d be a nice idea to create a weekly blog post where we pick out the most active users and highlight some of the great additions to the site… We’re not quite sure how it’s going to work or whether it’ll have a set format, so let’s treat this as the pilot.
