"Taking to the stage 15 minutes early the 5 piece wasted no time crashing into a stirring instrumental track, verging on the epic and a little out of keeping with the rest of the set.
Fronted by the diminutive Yannis (is he sitting down, no he’s standing up, no he’s sitting down, no, no he’s definitely standing up) they barely pause for breath before we’re into the second song, Yannis’ vocals now to the fore.
Immediate impressions bring comparisons to The Cure (his voice is the double of Robert Smith’s) and the dance rock edge of The Rapture. But whilst it’s always easy to draw comparisons with other acts it has to be said that Foals do seem to offer something a bit more original than most bands that are emerging at the moment, the music being less about the melody and more about shaping monolithic grooves which those vocals manage to sit perfectly on top of.
Brief on banter, we get ‘a song about vampires’ another ‘about Heathrow on Christmas eve’ the band race through the set, possessing an incredible energy between them, bunching into little groups or bounding around the stage, the keyboard player’s dancing making Ian Curtis’ stage persona looked composed. It’s obvious that they love what they do and take it completely seriously, 6 or 7 songs, no fillers and they’re off stage 35 minutes after they took to it, a punch in the face of a set that left you dazed in a ‘what the fuck just happened’ kind of way but also leaving you with the feeling that you might have just seen something a little bit special."
