"This single event is what made 1994 memorable in the town of Norman. Met with several friends, ended up making life-long connections stemming from this event, as so many others had as well that night.
Norman Oklahoma is not the place you'd expect to see Marilyn Manson and NIN - the bible belt is very conservative and restrictive to the point of being oppressive, so being in the middle of so much energy and intensity there was part of a vibe I won't forget. Keep in mind it was 1994.This show had to be - by far - the most incredible spectacle I've ever seen in one night.
when Jim Rose Circus Started up, I was not sure what to expect, and indeed I had no idea what was going on there, it was very engaging and odd. It was the most different way to open a show I'd seen, and a brilliant move by the artist and promoters. Strange and alternative - and it fit the motif.
Manson - what can I say - this was the first I'd seen of them, and I'd only heard the singles at the time. This put the hook in me, AMAZING STAGE PRESENCE !!!
Manson was on to something, this performance was era-defining and shaped music listening for more than a decade afterward. Mesmerizing. Some excellent guitar work as well. The Downward Spiral was still so fresh in the minds of the fans and was the theme.
Lots of hate filled, heavily distorted synth sounds, and vibe was one of angst, but had a hint of hopelessness to it that very few bands have ever been able to capture without sounding 'depressing'. This sound was the opposite of the apparent theme, filled with life and determination. The performance that Trent gave Oklahoma on that night was truly awe inspiring. And to think before this and after this, the Oklahoma Events Commission had been such a little biatch about the content and crowd - complaining about the presence of Manson at the venue, and some commotion about some sort of 'little bible' that he was throwing out into the crowds - perfect ! All press is good press, and this generated so much interest it prompted throngs of ticketless religious people to show up in the parking lot just to see the spectacle, some held picket signs! Never seen that before.
Great sound. Energy was off the scale, and the lighting was very complex and advanced for the time. NIN was always way ahead, and this show demonstrated that fact every minute it went on. The drop down screen on certain songs, like 'reptile' was a most incredible idea and added dimensionality to the stage that helped define the emotional aesthetic.
NIN - Always leading the pack, always innovating and superseding previous efforts.
This tour was a defining moment for Trent and NIN as a concept. Oklahoma had never seen anything like this before, and Norman was thankfully never the same after it.This show was the most musically connected I'd been to NIN. A perfect memory."
