Tour name: Pharoah Sanders Quartet live at the Royal Northern College of Music
Band on the Wall and Manchester Jazz Festival present the legendary saxophonist and his quartet at live Manchester's RNCM.
Pharoah Sanders – tenor saxophone
Dan Tepfer – piano
Oli Hayhurst – double bass
Gene Calderazzo – drums
Undoubtedly a Manchester Jazz Festival highlight, this rare UK appearance features Sanders with his pianistic collaborator of over 30 years, along with his UK rhythm team of choice.
Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive saxophone sounds in jazz and is revered by a great many jazz fans, having made his name with John Coltrane’s spiritually-driven expressionistic ensembles of the mid-’60s. Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones, Sanders’ sound can be raw and abrasive. Yet, his later music is guided by more graceful concerns and has embraced wider resources, from free to mainstream; some of his best work is his most accessible. As a mature artist, Sanders has discovered a hard-edged lyricism that has served him well.
“Pharoah is a man of large spiritual reservoir, always trying to reach out to truth.” John Coltrane.
