Tour name: Pantha Du Prince vs Federation Bells
As the sun sinks below the skyline and bathes the city in a rose-tinted haze, Pantha Du Prince will take control of the iconic Federation Bells, ringing out his ethereal soundscapes and sending shining bell textures shimmering through the twilight air.
Lay back on the grass or grab a seat outside The Residence, and listen in awe as the renowned German-techno minimalist presents a world-first performance.
No stranger to bells, Pantha Du Prince recently collaborated with The Bell Laboratory (Oslo) to produce the world-acclaimed Elements of Light, a project which the artist is presenting at Melbourne Recital Centre as part of MMW.
The Federation Bells installation is a hidden gem on Melbourne’s cultural landscape consisting of 39 upturned bells mounted atop poles, and struck by computer controlled hammers. This mesmerising performance will be supported by Melbourne art-rockers Glasfrosch, who will incorporate the Federation Bells into a live performance that crosses pop, jazz and ambient textures.
To celebrate this remarkable, world-first performance, City of Melbourne presents the Federation Bells Composition Competition. Whether an experienced creator or novice tune-maker, you are invited to submit an original piece of music for the Federation Bells. There are a range of prizes to be won, with the grand prize-winner receiving $2000. You can also get a head start on your composition with a Federation Bells Composition workshop, at the Art Centre’s Digital Learning Hub.
In a further celebration of MMW, the Federation Bells will ring out for full hour to salute the conclusion of The Residence programming each night.
