"Ok . . . I know it's up to the artist to do their own show, but this *was* billed as a "40th Anniversary" tour, so a lot of vintage, kickin' tunes were anticipated. Would it have killed Maddy & crew to pep it up a bit? The entire first set (with the exception of 2 reels) was mostly a dirge . . . a parade of slow, morose ballads, with even grimmer themes. I get that the gang's older now, but Maddy Prior *sitting* during the reels?? Where was the happy dancing? Or at least a playful flip of the skirt? The last song of the set finally dipped into the best part of their oeuvre (the really old stuff) with a pretty decent rendition of "Thomas the Rhymer", so hope was kindled anew for the second set. (Maybe the first set was that hokey "slow, quiet" part of the show, with the second half kickin' it up a notch . . . like so many groups (lamely) do?) But no, alas, more of the same . . . the encore, happily, finally produced "All Around My Hat", but by then I was half asleep from all the sleepy, slow, grim numbers. I saw them waayyyy back in the early '70's and I've seen their DVD recently, so I know that they are capable of a rousing concert. This wasn't it. (Seen a lot of older rockers recently and they usually all rise to the challenge of the occasion . . . It's certainly ok to get older, but if it affects the show, then maybe a Rock & Roll concert is no longer in the cards for them . . . the musician-ship was awesome, as usual, but this *is* Irish & Brit folk music set to R&R, is it not? Some liveliness, jumpiness, rockiness . . . would have been much appreciated."
