"Formed in 1998, Eagles of Death Metal have finally been gaining a serious audience over the last couple of years, mainly I imagine due to the fact that if you see these guys live you simply have to take them seriously, albeit with a massive fucking grin on your face.
Originally and wrongly seen as a side project for Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme (the band was co-founded by Homme), the band has grown out of a need to not take the music scene too seriously but at the same time put down some rock hard tunes with a fuck yeah attitude.
Playing the Pyramids as part of their eagerly awaited UK tour the band stride onto the stage with a coolness that only these guys can pull off, frontman Jesse "the devil" Hughes grinning from ear to ear, all aviator shades and redneck facial hair, picks up his guitar and the band rip into "Bad Dream Mama" to the crowds obvious delight.
It’s impossible not be carried along by the band's passion and enthusiasm, every riff, every wiseass lyric bringing a cheer and a smile, Hughes repeatedly telling us that we’re the best crowd ever( I bet that’s what he tells all the crowds), it always makes a difference when you know a band are loving a gig as much as the crowd are and this was obvious throughout. So much so that I don’t think anyone even noticed/cared that it was Gene Trautman rather than Josh Homme banging out the beats.
Set highlights included the massive "Cherry-Cola", "Whorehoppin’(Shit Goddamn)", the always great cover of "Stuck in the Middle (Metal) With You" and the moment during a particularly spectacular solo when the rest of the band including the drummer dropped their instruments to surround guitarist Dave Catching just to offer their appreciation for a fine piece of fretwork.
There’s no point looking for hidden meanings with Eagles Of Death Metal, purely and simply this is about the party, about the chicks, about the rock and roll and about the business of getting the fuck down as dirty as you can and there ain't nothing wrong with that."
