"I had no idea what to expect last night, I have never been to The Windmill and never seen any of the line up although I love Tommy's other incarnation as Pete and The Pirates and have both Tap Tap albums. I fully recommend both Lanzafame and On My Way.
I always feel better about heading to Brixton at night, people are far more interested in what they are doing than what anyone else is doing at night, so we headed to The Windmill chatting away like we knew where we were going - we sort of did but did have to check a bus map at least once.
I wasn't expecting it to be as tiny as it is, was expecting something more like Lexington where you can easily hide in the shadows making your way to the stage as the bands chime their first chords so was a little surprised at finding the only spot really to stand was in front of the stage. We walked in as Tap Tap were sound checking, now what is the set rules for this, do you stand and gape? do you try and carry on with your conversation and pretend they aren't really there or hide in the loos? I opted for carry on with the conversation and pretend its not really happening, that I had suddenly found myself in a surreal world where music was outlawed and by looking at the band you were committing some sort of heinous crime against humanity. I think next time I might do the stand and stare like some open mouthed freak cos the ignore option felt a little unnatural. They did sound pretty good so my excitement level increased enough for me to opt for a redbull. Hot Silk Pockets soundchecked next and I did a mix of the ignore and gawp options. No Cars then did theirs and then set up the stage for their set.
I had read before that No Cars would the best band of the evening by a very eager fanboy on Facebook. Their strong Japanese accents made the lyrics mostly unrecognisable but the music was more than enough to carry it over. They started their set with robot makes and a traditional dance, as I have said before I cannot stand things like that as they come across as gimmicks but it worked for No Cars. There was a Christmas song thrown in for good measure and all in all I cant agree they were the best band of the night but they were extremely lovable.
Hot Silk Pockets were a band I had been quite eager to check out, I keep seeing the drummer at various Petey Pirates gigs and really wanted to see what his band were about. They are very under ground, as in I cannot see them breaking into the mass market at any time, there was something very charming about it all but towards the end they were suffering from awful sound and I just wanted them off to save what was left of my ears. So a little disappointed but I would see them again happily.
Race Horses, if I am honest I forget these were playing, there had been no mention of them in any of the sites advertising the gig apart from the line up, no over eager fanboys or girls declaring their brilliance and no bumping into them at gigs. They were however pretty darn good, the song in welsh was particularly good, its not a language I have ever associated with singing but I was really surprised at how pleasant it sounded and how much I love the Welsh. Lead singer was a bit on the crazy side, always good, and he looked like he had taken the stage in his p jammies. The songs were catchy and they put together a good set, I will be keeping an eye out to catch them again.
Next up Tap Tap, I cannot say how long I have waited to hear the songs live as its been that long. Obviously with Pete and the Pirates doing quite well, Tap Tap has had to take the back step. Lanzafame was in my stereo alongside Pirates for about a year so the songs now feel like old friends. He is currently showcasing the next album On My Way which has gone the same way as Lanzafame, I keep getting a hankering for a listen and thus its usually the first thing that goes on in the morning. I cant remember the order but songs played were, Dirty Sky, Half Moon Street, Queen of Hearts, Star Crossed Idiots, El Gusano, Feelin Funny, I am a Kite, Off The Beaten Track, To Our Continuing Friendship and On My Way. The crowd were more than up for a little dance and we had a small circle of dancing people, I didnt join in as the redbull had taken a side effect for the worse and I felt awful, I had the shakes and my insides felt like they were taking a fast spin in a washing machine. Tommy confessed that he couldnt match the enthusiasm as he wasn't feeling so hot half way through and to be honest he looked like death warmed up. But he still managed a good show and I was very grateful he had dragged himself out of his sick bed to make the show. The band had various other bands members in it, one I recognised from Screaming Tea Party the others I didn't have a clue but they were pretty good especially as they aren't used to playing together.
I would love to catch another Tap Tap show. Instead I think I will have to keep myself contented with Pete and the Pirates, oh the hardship."
"at last a ticket link - now I can get excited about going to this gig, really cannot wait."
