Without a five star gig for me, I had stayed all night just above the pit on the raise section near the sound desk. A clear uninterrupted view of crowd and band, perfect.
Comet Gain were on first and although I have heard good things about them I have never managed to see them, I was impressed and really enjoyed their set. Was good to finally see Jon Slade play after seeing him at so many Cribs gigs. They played Saturday Night Facts of Life so I now know how the original sounds after owning The Cribs copy of years.
Adam Green is nuts, his songs are nuts and his dancing is nuts, he also has a strong singing voice. I was left with a feeling I have to see him again, my cheeks were hurting by the end of his set from smiling and laughing watching him, which I take as a good sign.
Then the band I had been waiting for, I saw them at the last Forum gig they did, and it is still one of my all time favourites so was expecting great things. Even though I wasnt in the pit, there was no way I was going to be standing still so jumped through the majority of the set, sang along so my throat is now croaking and came out just as drenched and tired as if I had been in the middle of it. A much better reaction to the older songs like Direction, Mirror Kissers and We Can No Longer Cheat You than in Leeds. I really want to know where the reputation for London crowds being crap comes from because last night proved different. Ryan asked at one point who in the crowd were old school fans and how did they class themselves as such, first or second album? So many people held up either one finger or two fingers to indicate which album they had. They proved ownership with the sing-a-longs and bouncing for the songs off the first and second albums. Men's Needs still gets the best reaction and by that stage the whole floor had erupted. Be Safe had bored me slightly in Leeds felt special last night, helped by seeing all the hands in the air and the loud crowd sing back. City of Bugs ends the set, I cant really find words to describe how good I think the song is and what effect it has on me live, but I think my heart stopped at one point from sheer over load. I certainly felt afterwards I hadnt made it out alive and it took a cool cola to get me back to planet earth.
