"These days, I wouldn't describe myself as Bono's biggest fan. His use of fame though music to push his political views can often make him appear smug and annoying. I'm not really a fan of U2's recent music either, which I feel is very middle of the road.
It was all different in 1998. Back then I was a huge U2 fan, and being invited to a free concert with support from Ash was a fantastic experience. Thinking back to the night brings a tear to my eye, remembering the moment when Bono was joined on stage by David Trimble of the Ulster Unionists and David Hume of the SDLP. They shook hands on stage, signaling that they were now prepared to campaign for peace together.
Four days later, having only just turned 18, I got to exercise my democratic right for the first time, and voted 'yes'. 71% Northern Ireland did the same and the Good Friday Agreement was passed, paving the road to peace.
Eleven years on, Northern Ireland is a very different place. There are still many serious issues, some of which may never be resolved, but we are much closer to a peaceful society than we were back then. I do feel that this concert represented a turning point for support of the agreement, and it wouldn't have been the same without the support of U2 and Ash.
I am therefore prepared to forgive Bono for being a bit annoying. Even if he continues to wear sunglasses indoors."
