"After witnessing a thoroughly breath taking and amazing show by the mars volta at the wiltern, I may have been setting my expectations a little too high for this show. It was hard not to, they met and surpassed creating the atmosphere of their first album, Deloused in the Comatorium, in their shows when playing through the songs and their lush jam sessions that would sometimes catch you off guard and throw you right back into the familiarity of a song. If you have no idea what I mean, go download Drunkship of Lanterns Live.
The first half of the show started off with songs from Deloused, sound quality not as good as those from the Wiltern, but I would have to blame the outdoor venue for that. But what I was waiting for was the second half of the show. The new material of frances the mute. I loved the album, and was waiting to get completely blown away by their perfect live show reproduction of the album, with more on the side.
It didn't happen. Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus opened up and I could tell right away that their album production was just a little too much. Guitars parts sounded thin, I was easily able to pick out each individual part and felt that it just wasn't melding like the Deloused songs. L'Via L'Viaquez did give me more hope, as Omar had some help with John Frusciante showing up, playing his part and tearing it up.
I'm doing this based on memory, a 4 year old memory at that, so bear with me. I know they played Miranda and Cassandra, but it must've been pretty stale because I have very little memory of it. In fact, I do remember having my attention taken away by an irritating women who seemed to have been tripping off acid and spreading gonorrhea around. Seriously, she was all over 5 different guys in different areas of my section. She also tended to go to the railing and lean over quite a bit, each time spilling a bit of her alcohol and us hoping she would fall over.
I left the show disappointed, the new material was lacking in the atmophere that impressed me so much the first time, gonorrhea girl didn't fall over the railing, and I had to wait a good hour to get out of the stacked parking. This was also the beginning of the end with my liking the mars volta. Tremulant EP, Deloused, and Frances were all masterpieces. But then releases such as Amputechture and The Bedlam in Goliath completely turned me off of them. "
