The Boston Pops Orchestra has a rich heritage. Playing their first concert in 1885, the Orchestra was formed with the intention of presenting a lighter form of classical music that would be more suited to the general public. When Arthur Fielder took over as conductor in 1930 he began to further fuse classical and more popular sounds and this led to The Boston Pop Orchestra selling more commercial recordings than any other orchestra in the world.
All this speaks volumes about the quality of performance The Boston Pops Orchestra gives and seeing a group of highest-level musicians performing pieces steeped in history and popular significance is unlike anything else. No other orchestra has aimed to be so accessible to all forms of people than The Boston Pops, and the blend of pop and classical compositions leaves something for everyone.
After Arthur Fielder sadly passed, legendary film composer John Williams assumed the role of conductor and continued to build the accessibility with the addition of film scores to the orchestra’s repertoire. If you are worried that you’re not right for the classical world, do not fear because the Boston Pops Orchestra are an experience for everyone to enjoy.
