Biography
Massachusetts-native Rachel Platten first learn to play classical piano at the age of five and later immersed herself in her high school’s signing group. During her time at Trinity College studying International Relations, Platten sang in the school’s a cappella group, the Trinitones, before working at a record label on a study abroad trip to Trinidad. A telling moment occurred when the budding musician was invited to sing backup for her friend’s band in front of 80,000 people in 2002. After returning home the singer moved to Greenwich Village, New York and began honing her skills in the Prince and Sly and the Family Stone cover band Dayz of Wild.
In 2003 Platten released her debut full-length album “Trust in Me”, which the singer has since admitted is more a collection of demos. Whilst failing to significantly raise her profile, the record increased Platten's industry know-how, and led to a series of shows opening for the likes of the Strokes, Regina Spektor, and Ziggy Marley. In 2009 the singer’s track “Seven Weeks” was featured in the romantic comedy “The Good Guy”, as well as a host of advertisements and TV series.
Rachel Platten’s sophomore studio album “Be Here” arrived in 2011 featuring collaborations with Fredrik Thomander, the Wizards of Oz, Jerry Abott, and Grant Black. Released by Rock Ridge Music in the Spring, the record spawned the Billboard Adult Pop Songs Chart No. 24 “1,000 Ships”, and was supported by two years of extensive touring. The singer’s profile was raised again when her track “Work of Art” was used in the cable TV show “Jane by Design” and subsequently “Pretty Little Liars”.
Released in 2014 Platten’s singles “Smile” and “Fight Song” featured in the 2014 film “Annie” following which the singer announced that she had signed with Columbia Records. Following an early 2015 tour opening for X Factor winners Alex & Sierra, the singer released the four-track EP “Fight Music” in May 2015. Rising to No. 20 on the Billboard 200, the EP catapulted the singer to notoriety, aided by the Billboard Hot 100 No. 7 single “Fight Song”.
Live reviews
So I first heard about Rachel platten when I was visiting America and she was doing an interview on the radio where she played a fee songs and talked about then and life. I said from that moment I needed to see her if she came to the UK and in a couple of months I got an email saying that she was playing bush hall, London! AMAZING! I quickly booked tickets for me and my sister and was so very excited. It was a small sold out venue with about 400 people. Waiting for her to come on to this small stage felt like a lifetime. The croud was intimate and chatty but it felt a lot like there was just a random group of people shoved in a room without reason... enter Rachel! In a matter of seconds, she brought this room full of strangers together as one and with purpose. And boy was she incredible! Her vocals were on point with every song. She sang each song with such soul and meaning, not like it was 'Just a song' but put every bit of heart into it making every word matter. What I founds truly touching and actually really refreshing, is that she wasn't arrogant and didn't appear to seem better than anyone. She showed such humble gratitude. She seemed genuinely touched by the deserved reaction she got. She said how this was the first time she had played outside the US and wasn't expecting us to sing her lyrics back to her. She had the whole croud gripped for the entire concert. She was truly incredible, everything I wanted her to be and more! Her last song was fight song, which she sang and brought us to tears and then, at the end, she asked her band to stop playing and she played it on piano and the croud alone carried the chorus. That must have felt amazing for her. Such a beautiful woman with so much talent!!! I hope she comes back to London soon, I'll be there.
My suggestion to rachel would be to do a set at one of the UK's festivals this summer just because there are massive crouds and she could make herself known and really put her name out there. The UK are ready for you Rachel, we want you to be crazy successful and you deserve to be known! Hope to see you again! And Thank you for such inspirational words! ♡ plattenums
Omg she was amazing I live her she is a very talented person and went perfect with Pentatonix This was my first concert and it couldn't have been better. She had a lot of energy and it's not common for artist to sound good if not better live rather than having their voices auto tooned to sound good she is a naturally an amazing singer she should be very proud with what she performed last night she sounded even better in person live than how she sounds on the radio when I listened to her song (my favorite of hers) broken glass she sounded amazing and I listened to it today on the radio and I think it sounded better at the concert I definitely will go to her concert if she comes again I was VERY pleased!!!!
Rachel was wonderful. I love her voice, her songs, her dancing and her stories. The only negative was waiting to hear her. We were seated by 6:30 and didn't expect a warm up singer. I didn't really hear the words she was singing except DeJaVu. Then after she got off the stage we waited more than a half hour for Rachel. By 8:30 PM the show was off to a good start.
She's adorable and powerful all in one! I'm definitely a bigger fan because I saw her perform. Her style has a heavy bass line that will draw you in and have you cheering for her, if not yourself when relating to well written and well sung lyrics.
She was just so amazong I don’t even know how to describe it. Their sets were set up in a great order that really gave off a great energy, and she did great in her mashup with Penatonix. It seems like she and the band really enjoy what they do.
Rachel was great! Park West is a relatively small venue, but we got there at a decent hour and found a nice booth that was open. The sound quality was good and the openers for her were also good.
