Biography
Originally formed as a grindcore band by Jeremy Carroll in 2006, Carroll subsequently invited guitarist Andrew Mikhail, vocalist Adam Warren, drummer Michael Southcomb, and bassist Kevin Hare to join the band. Influenced by the likes of Behemoth and the Acacia Strain, the band began honing their technical skills and intense death metal stage show in local venues around Chicago. Having recorded the album in late 2008, Oceano released their debut full-length “Depths” in April 2009. Issued on Earache Records, the album was produced by Joey Sturgis and spawned videos for the songs “District of Misery” and “A Mandatory Sacrifice”.
Following the release, original member Carrol was fired from the band due to conflicts with other members, which threw the band’s longevity into uncertainty. Despite this, with a reformed line-up, Oceano released their sophomore album “Contagion” in November 2010. The album earned mix reviews from the music press yet became the band’s highest charting album, peaking at No. 3 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart. The album highlighted Oceano’s used of the murky drop A tuning and, like its predecessor, was supported by a extensive touring schedule.
In 2012 the band, despite rumours that they were breaking up, went on a short hiatus that lasted until January 2013 with the release of the single “Slow Murder”. The release marked the lead single of the album “Incisions” issued in October 2013, once again on Earache Records. With the addition of Michael Kasper, Scott Smith, and Chris Wagner, Oceano released their fourth studio album “Ascendants” in the spring of 2015. Featuring a heavier, more atmospheric sound, the album peaked at No. 14 on the U.S. Hard Rock chart.
Live reviews
Oceano is an American deathcore style band that formed in 2006. Their first debut album was called 'Depths' which they released in 2009, followed by their second album called 'Contagion' in 2010. There were rumours however during their career that they would be splitting back in 2012 but they proved that wrong by releasing another album called 'Incisions' in 2013. There has been a lot of losing members of the band and having to find new ones for the group due to personal reasons, but the group is still going strong and performing in different venues. However my problem with this group is that it is impossible to understand what they are saying and I know they are a deathcore group, but I didn't feel like myself or many people were enjoying their performance. The best thing about the show for me was the flashing strobe lights and the drummer going insane at the back of the stage, they sounded and looked like every other deathcore band and there was nothing unique about them. If that's the sort of thing you're into you would probably enjoy the constant screaming and unrecognizable lyrics being shouted out at you, but I couldn't enjoy it and it's not the best group in this genre that I've ever seen to be honest.
