Wynter Gordon deserves much more attention than she gets. She is a highly talented songwriter, having penned songs for Danity Kane, Leighton Meester and even Mary J. Blige. But even more noteworthy are the songs that she not only writers, but performs herself.
When she performed at SXSW 2013, I got an opportunity to see her live set, and it was…in a word: awesome. Her music is very electronic and fast paced, but this particular live set; she put more concentration on musicality than electronics for some of her songs, allowing for more better showcasing of her vocal ability. Don’t get me wrong, she still very much performed her high energy, fast paced songs like “Til Death,” but she also took “Dirty Talk” down with an acoustic guitar player, as well as a percussionist, and a slightly slower pace. Oh my! It was completely unexpected and so beautiful. Scattered between her original songs she also included covers songs like Rihanna’s “We Found Love.” She also did a better than the original cover of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” Both covers really showcased her vocal ability and range, something I didn’t quite conceive of until seeing her live.
I MUST also add that she is also a great entertainer in between songs as well. She really got the crowd pumped up! She even came down to the crowd to take a selfie with them. Truly an underrated performer.
