I was lucky enough to see Darren Criss for free(!) live at a festival in my neighborhood, a few years ago right at the start of Glee fame. I've been a fan since A Very Potter Musical and was excited, but I wasn't expecting such a great, varied performance. The repertoire ranged from Disney covers to jazz standards to covers made famous on Glee to his original music (which for me was the best part). Darren switched from guitar to piano and back; there was something for everyone.
It's got to be said that Darren is super sweet and charming, and is one of the more gracious musicians I've had the pleasure of seeing. He may be a star at this point, but he was down to earth and humble, and that was nice. He's also - as should be obvious from his theater and TV performances - got a ton of presence and had the whole crowd under his thumb whether getting everyone dancing or talking seriously about society.
At this particular performance we also got the treat of having Lauren Lopez (Draco in AVPM, among other more recent credits) up on stage to sing "Granger Danger". This made this super special but not unique - inviting Starkid and Glee costars to join in is a recurring feature of his concerts and is very possible if you're going to see him.
Would absolutely recommend, and if you can get to see him with a stand-up general admission sort of venue so much the better.
He was totally awesome! I had so much fun and I met Lauren Lopez, Joey Ritcher, and Brian Rosenthal! They all signed my Starkid t-shirt and made and took a picture with me. Darren was very funny and nice and apologetic when he couldn't say hi to the crowd. I brough an art piece I did of him so hopefully at his next venture when he comes out he can sign it. Him and his brother were a pleasure to watch and listen too! I was very excited that they played Freelance Whale's songs! They all did an amazing job and I can't wait till he does another show. Sign me up! Never stop doing what you love Darren and Chuck!
Hedwig itself was an overwhelming, joyful, poignant, high-energy, life-altering event! Few other musicals deliver in the same way. The updated dialogue kept us grounded in the present, and the mature content was handled as tastfully as it was funny. Bravo! Darren Criss was dynamic and inspiring, giving a performance that would be hard for anyone to top. Lena Hall was equally amazing, well deserving of her Tony award. The show might not be everyone's cup of tea, but there is no mistaking a high quality production like this.
Darren was out of this world fantastic!! His voice, energy, delivery and talent were so on point. Betsy Wolfe was a perfect compliment to his abilities. I'm so impressed I'm going to see the performance again today!!! I loved the venue as well. We had box seats so the view of the stage was excellent.
Darren is an amazing performer. It's impossible to take your eyes off him when he's on stage. His stage presence is incredible and his voice is really really good. A great actor too! I highly recommend.
