Biography
Having been bought her first guitar age 11, Aplin, influenced by Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen, soon found a musical outlet for her creativity. During her studies at the City of Bath College, Aplin participated in recordings the college’s label BA1 Records, before earning a considerable fan base for her enticing covers of artitsts such as You Me at Six, Cee Lo Green and Bon Iver on her YouTube channel.
In 2010 Aplin made an appearance on the local radio station BBC Wiltshire ahead of her debut 5-tack EP entitled “Acoustic”, which later reached the Top 25 in the UK iTunes album chart. From the release, the song “Reverse” featured on the E4 TV show “Made in Chelsea”, exposing the musician to a new and young audience.
Aplin released her sophomore EP “Never Fade” in May 2011 and introduced a wider variety of instruments and sounds, including a notable folk influence. In support of the EP Aplin performed four songs for BBC Introducing at the revered Maida Vale Studios, including the highly-popular cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You”. A third EP “Home” by the singer-songwriter arrived in January 2012 and cemented Aplin’s position as a new and young British talent and featured the title single “Home”, which featured on the BBC One TV drama “Prisoner’s Wives”.
In February 2012 Aplin signed with Parlophone Records and was the featured artist on the 2012 John Lewis Christmas Advert with her cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love”. Ahead of her debut album, Aplin released her major label single “Please Don’t Say You Love Me” in early 2013. Her full-length debut “English Rain” arrived in shortly after and charted at No. 2 in both the UK and Scottish album charts. The singer launched her own record label Never Fade Records in 2012 as an outlet for her own songs as well as other similar artists, and has since signed welsh act Hannah Grave and Saint Raymond.
Live reviews
Gabrielle Aplin has the voice of an angel. I saw her perform an acoustic, intimate gig at Rough Trade East and it was astounding. In just 25 minutes, she made me long for a voice like hers. Gabrielle Aplin doesn’t need the accompaniment of the band that’s on her record, all she needs is her guitar and voice. As you’re standing there watching her perform, you forget about the world around you as for that moment, all you care about is listening right to the very end of the song. You wouldn’t expect that Gabrielle Aplin started off by uploading covers of bands such as Paramore and You Me At Six to YouTube. Her voice is so different to the likes of Hayley Williams, that Gabrielle Aplin puts her own unique touch on her covers. It’s after this success that she released her debut album ‘English Rain’ and is why I was watching her do a promotional gig in store Rough Trade which she needn’t do as the album sells itself. The highlight of her in store gig would be her performance of ‘Home’. It’s a delightful song about realising where home is for you. It will touch anyone whether home is a place or if it’s with the people you’re with.
Quintessentially British singer/songwriter Gabrielle Aplin received her commercial break through an actual commercial as she recorded a fragile and emotive version of 'Power of Love' for John Lewis's Christmas campaign. However this powerful and intelligent musician was never going to fade into obscurity following this early chart success as she followed up with a #1 UK album and a supporting promotional tour.
Her tones are just as idyllic and beautiful live as they are via recording. It is clear that Aplin's voice is a true gift and she has trained it well over the years as she knows how to manipulate it between the fairly upbeat 'Panic Cord' compared to the brooding and spanning 'Salvation'. She is pretty unassuming onstage yet proves to be having the best time as she laughs and jokes with the crowd knowing they will gift her with large cheers for early hit 'Please Don't Say You Love Me'. It is the bonafide road trip anthem 'Home' that receives the largest reaction though as Gabrielle invests her whole being into the performance of this alt-folk gem. With a sophomore album due soon, Aplin is destined to be the next UK female pop mega-songstress.
This was one amazing concert !! The Union Chapel venue was perfect and being in December was beautifully Christmassy !! The variety and mix of artists performing both in their own right and alongside Gabrielle was an extremely special blend. The whole evening was touching, soul-reaching, magical and honest, with also many laughs included !! The final section, when all the artists came together on stage for a united Christmas musical celebration, ended a wonderful time in the most wonderful way !! Simply perfect !!
Great atmosphere as Gabby and her band crammed onto a tiny stage at the Deaf Institute in Manchseter. From the opening "Light Up The Dark" to the encore "Home" a great gig and I would recommend anyone to see this talented singer/songwriter. I filmed 8 songs and put them on youtube (bazh7) Here is Sweet Nothing https://youtu.be/sJdva8xUb38.
The concert was fab . The upcoming atists on your with her was amazing also . My legs were killing by the end of the concert from standing for 4 hours but it was amazing she's an angel , she's sounds exactly like she does in her recorded music . The venue Was easy to access and the line was very quick . Amazing to see so many support her
Beautiful venue and acoustics which only enhanced the sublime voices all the artists, especially Gabrielle’s and Hannah’s. Loved the new songs My Mistake and December.
My friend and I were blown away by the whole event. Big congratulations and thanks to all involved
Last saw Gabrielle on her english rain tour. She was great then, but totally on another level this tour. Her voice is stronger than ever, her command of the stage brilliant, and her choice to go for intimate spaces made the whole show really special.
I've seen her twice live and I already have bought my ticket for the next one. What an amazing performer. When you see her live in such an intimate concert as the ones she usually does, talent is just an understatement.
Such an amazing night! An incredible atmosphere and support acts too! I've been waiting so long to see Gabrielle and it was everything I imagined and more, I love her even more now and can't wait to see her again
