Passers-by peered over the edge of the escalators at HMV Glasgow as One Night Only took to their makeshift stage for an intimate gig. The five northern lads are a palatable, fresh-faced Wombats-and-Kooks blend, who put on a clean, fun performance of indie-pop.
The boys, who come from North Yorkshire, were dressed in black and white to match the logo design on their drum kit - sharp yet casual, they adopted white t-shirts, black blazers and black skinny jeans, turning them from straight-laced quintet to excitable rockers.
Lead singer George Craig impressed fans with his coarse yet melodic vocals, throwing his Julian-Casablancas-inspired mop of hair around in enthusiasm as the group tore through their classic "Just For Tonight," causing their audience to scream along with them (regardless of the DVD browsers). Rhythm guitarist Mark Hayton paced restlessly around their small, confined space, willing the stage to expand to give the group more freedom to perform. A guitar strum from Craig and a pounding beat from drummer Sam Ford triggered the Two-Door-Cinema-Club-infused "Forget My Name," with its insatiably catchy guitar riff. The pace was significantly slowed down for "Chemistry," a song that combines the band’s youthfulness with the classic rock of Elbow and U2. Ford smashed his hi-hat with full force as Jack Sails sounded the keyboard and Craig bellowed into his microphone, filling all corners of the store with guitar-infused echoes. A spotless, shiny show that left their fans craving more songs and a less stifled performance space.
