There are sadly not too many really well known New Zealand artists, especially in the electronica world. He used to be a part of Salmonella Dub, but decided instead to pursue a solo career, a move that earned him platinum selling singles in his home of New Zealand.
Just from watching his live set, you can immediately tell how his culture has influenced him greatly. Before he even takes the stage, a face appears on the screen, a face that is (I’m assuming) a traditional mask or painting for native New Zealanders. The face speaks with a booming voice, “Truth, Integrity, Knowledge, Independence” and immediately the spotlight hits the stage and Tiki Taane is on the stage, front in center with his mic and playing a conch. And this is just for the opening song of “Tangaroa.” Also present on the stage are traditionally dressed warriors and women who participate in the chant; as well as the instrumentalists and DJ. The incorporation of so much rich history and tradition with the electronic sounds of the tracks is something very unique. I really liked the contrast of old and new, especially since it seemed like the driving force behind Tiki Taane’s passion for music and performance.
