Biography
The band formed in January 1993 when Garrett Dutton was performing at Boston bar, The Tam O’Shanter, which was where he met drummer, Jeffrey Clemens. They began working together as a duo, and were joined a few months later by bassist Jim Prescott. In 1994 they released their self-titled debut album on Okeh Records. Due to their song “Cold beverage” being played on MTV, the album almost went Gold.
On September 19th 1995, they released their follow-up album “Coast to Coast Motel”, which didn’t sell as much as the first album but it received much better critical acclaim. The band like so many other experienced a little bit of turmoil with each other, causing the band to go on an indefinite hiatus, but returned on October 28th 1997, with “Yeah, It’s That Easy”. It was this album that featured the single, “Stepping Stones”, which made it to number 30 on the U.S. Modern Rock chart. The album showcased a prominent soul influence.
Following the release of this album, the band embarked on a world tour but returned to Philadelphia in 1999 for the release of their fourth studio album “Philadelphonic” which was followed again by “Electric Mile” in 2001, which introduced hip-hop, funk, psychedelica, blues and soul. They performed as the house band for Comedy Central’s show Turn Ben Stein On, which ran from 1999-2001. In the summer of 2005, the band featured in an advertisement for the launch of Coca-Cola Zero, which featured the group’s own unique version of the noted Coca-Cola advertising song “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing”.
Live reviews
The bizarrely named band G. Love & Special Sauce are known for stripping the genre of R & B back to its laid back Blues roots and this sound has proven increasingly popular with their growing cult-like fan base. The live format gives the group even more room for experimentation and they are known to incorporate genres including funk and rock into their sound.
They have a live setup unlike any conventional hip hop group featuring a vast array of instruments to create the bizarre sounds. The audience remains enthusiastic throughout heckling with the performers during song breaks and clapping, chanting and singing on command. This level of interaction is greatly appreciated from the band and there is a mutual adoration from both sides.
By the time the band performs a ridiculous cover of The Beatles 'Why Don't We Do It in the Road?' all conventions have been well and truly dismissed and everybody is clearly here to have fun.
G Love & Special Sauce is a very funkadelic mix of blues, rock and hip hop. G Love has a lot of soul in his music. The kind of music that never lets your booty quit shakin. The band plays as a 3 piece or 4 piece band. G plays lead guitar and sings, Houseman is on the drums and has just the right amount through every fill. Jim Prescott plays a stand up bass and will definitely give you great bass lines and a solo while he spins that big bass around. G has huge and great charisma that invites you into his eclectic sound. He will usually give you a great cover or two by the end of the show like The Beatles "Why Don't We Do It In The Road". They are great for big festivals and even better in dark clubs. You can tell they are in it for the music as opposed to fame or fortune. G Love and Special Sauce come highly recommended for a good time always!
This was my second time in the past 12 months seeing G Love & Special Sauce in Columbus.
Another great show. They are music focused and you can see the love for the craft in the eyes of all 3 of them. The set tonight was heavy on the blues and funk side of GLASS stuff, which is most of their stuff.
Venue was great, staff was friendly and efficient. Crowd was great for most part. I will always be frustrated with people who go to shows then spend the whole time talking with their back to the stage. Seems like a waste to me! There was one of them in front of me, but she didn't impact my show.
Will see GLASS anytime I can!
Great show all around. Have seen G Love & Special Sauce a few times. Sometimes they do 2 sets, sometimes play straight through. This was all one set but about 2 hours of great stuff. The Cold Beverages jam in the middle was spot on, and closing with I-76 was great for me since that was one of my favorites when that album came out.
The opener was also killer. Very guitar driven mix of funk & blues. DJ Williams and Shots Fired was the group.
Spot on performance positive energy and good vibes were flowing. He pulled in a couple horn players from the warm up band Ripe, genius- these guys can blow with the best of them! The warm up band was so good I immediately downloaded both their recordings this morning. Don't miss this tour, it's even better than the Lemonaide tour, and I never thought I'd say that. Bonus was purchasing a Minneapolis set list from 2015 tour, epic night.
We just got married on the 14th and this was a great start to our lives together! It was an amazing ambiance and overall awesome vibe at this show. I have never been able to see them live before this but I will definitely go again and again. They put on the best show everyone was pumped and excited!
Another great G. Love show in the books. The band never disappoints and last night was no different. The venue was a bit smaller than others we've seen them at but it didn't detract from the show at all. The band played a great mix of classics and newer songs from the Sugar album.
I thought the people that went their were not my style, I enjoyed Matt Costa I couldn't watch G Love because it was past my curfew.
I thought matt was a special dude. he made my 2015 a beautiful place to remember in Sacramento. Go G Love

Phenomenal intimate show with one of the greatest artists- for 25 years G.Love has been jamming and this show presented his best. Very honored to get to see him in such a small venue-- renewed our love for G.Love!
