Biography
Maybe it takes some of the romance out of being an artist, but wouldn’t it be more refreshing to have some musicians that could have done anything they wanted in their life? The stories of musicians who feel that they’re no good at anything else have become a cliché. We as an audience known that if they weren’t playing music then they wouldn’t be dead or in jail anyway, they’d probably be in an office of some kind. It was always hyperbole anyway, in most cases, but doesn’t it mean more to have artists that actively chose to pursue the arts?
K. Michelle is a perfect example of this. Not only did she learn the guitar and piano as a kid, not only did she have singing lessons from the man who trained Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears as well, but she earned a scholarship to Florida A&M University before she was 18. She began her degree majoring in Biology and left with a degree in Psychology, so in Michelle’s case, music’s gain is very much academia’s loss. So it’s just as well that she’s pretty amazing at what she does.
By 2009 she’d signed with Jive Records; however her first four singles there didn’t catch the public’s eye in the way many people hoped they would. They were good enough to attract the attention of Usher, Akon and Missy Elliot, who were slated to guest on her debut album on the label, but she was brought out of her contract before the record could be finished. However, her career’s saving grace came from a highly unlikely source.
During her time on Jive Records, she’d made enough of a name for herself to join the cast of VH1’s reality TV series Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta. Her razor sharp wit, sense of humour and relentless work ethic made her the shows most beloved personality, earning her a deal with Atlantic Records, as well as her own spin off show in the form of K. Michelle: My Life.
Come 2013, her debut album “Rebellious Soul” was released, debuting at number 2 on the Billboard album charts and selling 72’000 copies in its first week. K. Michelle had arrived with authority, and with the release of her 2014 album “AWBAH” (an abbreviation of “Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?”) there isn’t a force around that can stop her. This is an artist who’s going to do great things in her time, and we should all stick around to watch it happen. Highly recommended.
Live reviews
K. Michelle is one of the most exciting female R & B stars to come out of the US in a long time. This artist gained a legion of devoted fans from 2010 debut 'You Gonna Learn' to the new legions who picked up her debut 'Rebellious Soul' in their thousands and sent it straight to #2 of the US Billboard chart. An incredible feat to achieve for a debut album.
When out on the road, Kimberley (to use her real name) is backed by a talented band of musicians who are completely in tune with the charismatic performer. Her female fans seem to really relate to the empowering lyrics found within her debut LP. A flawless performance of 'I Don't Like Me', cowritten by Eric Hudson, resonates with the crowd and brings a change in pace from the high energy, dance stylings of the rest of the album.
However, the mood is elevated as K. Michelle performs the silky smooth likes of 'Can't Raise A Man' and fan favourite 'S.V.O.P'. After touring with Robin Thicke, she was able to share her music with a wider audience and with a number two debut, she stands in a great position for album number two which is assured to be accompanied by another fantastic tour.
This was the last show of her “The People I Used to Know” tour at The Novo across from the Staple Center downtown L. A. and my girl did not disappoint. You can say a lot about her (she’s loud, petty, ratchet - she’ll tell you this herself) but one thing you can’t say is that she’s not talented. She writes and produces her songs and her voice can go toe to toe with the best of them! She sang a stable of her hits and even some jewels from her mixtapes. Her visuals were amazing and were of her name in lights, a car that was set on fire, actual fire, and my personal favorite, man on fire! She was personable on stage, had recently celebrated her birthday, has a signature drink that’s doing well and is set to open her 2nd restaurant in Atlanta. Kudos to all her successes and I will definitely see her when she comes to L.A. again.
I am very disappointed about my experience with this event.I wasn't able to print my tickets off of the Ticketmaster site which caused me and my significant other to miss the event.I have been given nothing but run arounds from Ticketmaster on refunding me my money back on a event I wasn't able to attend. They told me that K.Michelle promoters would not give me my money back I will not be supporting another one of her events again someone could have made some kind of accommodation to a customer who didn't receive a show.I still think she's a great artist but there needs to be a better solution when things occur like this people don't have money to just give away like that.
Her performance was awesome. The preshow was awful. And the staff at the Tabernacle were completely unprofessional and poor communication amongst each other. Which paid the meet and greet we paid for a waste for the 2nd year in a row. They messed up the line, were very rude and just nasty rushing us on when we paid for a meet and greet. We couldn't even get our photos signed. I pay for meet and greet every year and I never get to do anything but take a picture and get pushed out of the door. 6 years straight I have supported her and I never get to talk to her. But it's cool. Regardless I will still support K. Michelle because I am a true fan.
Spend so much time listening to K. Michelle. I couldn't miss this event. She is the realest on the scene right now. She knows how to write that music. My son says she is a dangerous lady. The only down side to this evening was leaving my son, and other kids, who would have given anything to see her. They were so excited when I shared the video footage with them.
She was very beautiful and classy. Most important of all she sang all of my favorites. From this moment on, when I listen to her CDs I will always remember this night. I still can't believe that I actually saw her. She was great and worth it!
K. Michelle is a GODDESS. The concert last night was amazing! Unlike tons of other singers the way she sounds live is exactly how she sounds if you were listening to her tracks on your phone. The venue was kinda cramped and I'm short so I could see her very well sometimes but that's inevitable anyway. Seeing her there in person is so cool because I watch her on Love and Hip Hop religiously. I'd definitely see her live again.
The perfomance was great and it was awesome seeing K. Michelle. The only problem was that I got tickets to do the meet and greet and never got to do the meet and greet. The club seemed to be not prepared and kind of disorganized with handling the meet and greet guess. There was no line or anything on where to go or what to do. Besides not getting what I paid for everything else was nice.
The dopest artist ever. Love h ow she does her current music anbd then she always do her mixtape music. I would always see her. She also comes down in the crowd after every show to praise her fans. It's like she's genuinely an mindful artist of her fans. She's genuinely thankful and you can feel that when she's performing.
This performance was indescribable, words can’t eveb express the performance that I experienced last night! This was my first concert ever and I’m glad my first was seeing K. Michelle. Her voice, her down to earth persona, I loved everything about her! I just didn’t want the night to end!! I LOVE YOU K MICHELLE!!
