Kobra and the Lotus are a Canadian heavy metal band that formed in 2009. The lead singer and song writer is Kobra Paige, which I thought was refreshing to see a female as the lead singer of a heavy metal band, I've not seen many females perform this kind of music and the ones I have were never very good, but Kobra changes my opinion. The group performed at Download festival 2 years ago where I saw them play. A friend who was into metal music dragged me to see the group, but it’s not really my scene. I kind of enjoyed it though, which was rather unexpected. I still stood at the back as I didn't dare get close enough to risk being pushed into a mosh pit or want to attempt any sort of head banging, but the energy was off the chart and the band bounded around the stage that I almost feared for their lives a few times. They released their first album in 2010 called 'Out of the Pit', which does sound like a rather fitting name for a heavy metal album. The album was very popular in Canada and it was impressive to see they had such a following in the UK too when they came to Download festival, I'm normally very hesitant to watch new bands that aren't my initial music taste but after seeing them I wouldn't say no to trying something new in the future.
Kobra and her band were outstanding! She was supposed to be suffering from a cold but this in no way affected her performance; she combines beauty and athleticism with an outstanding live voice. The musicianship displayed by "the Lotus" was top notch; bass and guitars were of the highest order, but I was particularly impressed by the drummer. It is a shame that such an amazing band has to play to audiences of less than 50 people, however their professionalism and love for what they do made them perform as though there were 5000 watching them.
