KOAN Sound are a production duo hailing from Bristol, United Kingdom who formed in 2008. Since debuting, they have released seven extended plays and become one of the most exciting electronica acts to come from the U.K in a very long time.
Formed by Jim Bastow and Will Weeks in 2008 after their main projects came to a crashing halt, KOAN Sound debuted by creating a combative, almost violent take on dubstep barely a year after Skrillex had left From First To Last. As informed by bands like Rage Against The Machine and Incubus as they were by The Prodigy and Noisia, the duo first began making a name for themselves with the release of their single “Akira” in 2011, which was saw the band hailed as one of the msqot exciting names in dubstep's UK scene. This, of course, meant that after that point, the duo started to branch away from the sound with their subsequent work, but they still managed to sign to Skrillex's record label OWSLA in 2011 for the release of the “Funk Blaster EP”, their third record of its kind.
Since then, their records have been championed by a veritable who's who of British and American electronica, with their records being spun by everyone from Annie Mac and Benga, to MistaJam and Skream. They even flirted with the mainstream as well when a track of theirs was used in an advert for Nick Grimshaw's Radio 1 Breakfast Show in 2012. They've remixed for giants of all genre's as well, with Kasabian and Ed Sheeran requesting their services for the tracks “Days Are Forgotten” and “The A-Team” respectively. To this day, they remain one of the most respected names in British electronica, and come highly recommended.
Read moreKOAN Sound is an awesome electronic music group. Mixing in influences from many genres, KOAN Sound's tracks are highly danceable. They have a very basic stage set up, with just a light display with the band logo, changing colors, and the two masterminds of KOAN Sound working on stage. The lights, while minimal, adds a glow to the music, influencing how it affects the crowd. A funky groove is present through all of their set, and at Control the audience went wild for it.
KOAN Sound kept everything together, and made the night's glitchy and funky tracks meld perfectly with heavier sounds creating one of the best dance environments I've seen. The crowd is awesome, cheering KOAN on throughout their set, when they're not busying dancing! KOAN Sound doesn't interact much with the crowd, which is understandable, but their energy is there. Mixing in dubstep, the tempos and sounds come from all over, but it's still all held together with an effortless flow, showing that KOAN is in control of what they do.
They are becoming one of the best-known names in EDM today with many fans all over the world, and they show no signs of stopping anytime soon.
