Biography
Brother Ali is an unusual character. As a devout Muslim, Ali is an important figure for the Muslim community in the world of Hip Hop, standing alone in a world of drugs, sex and hedonism. Alongside his religious beliefs that are entirely opposite to the lifestyle of other Hip Hop artists, he also has the rare genetic condition of albinism, leaving him with a lack of pigment, making him even more unique. Yet whiles these facts make him a rare character, it is his socially conscious underground rap that has made him turn heads in hip hop, achieving significant success in the charts.
Growing up in various cities in the Midwest, US, his family settled in Minneapolis, where he began rapping at the tender age of eight, recording his first piece of music at 13. His demo tapes, "Rites of Passage" (2000) caught the attention of the Rhymesayers crew, who decided to sign Ali, bringing him along as part of their crew to the 2000 Scribble Jam, where Ali reached the finals. In 2003 he released his debut record, "Shadows on the Sun" which dealt with his struggles due to his albinism.
His next three records all entered the top 100 US Charts, entering the top ten of the Indie Charts and R & B/Rap Charts. 2007's "Undisputed Truth" peaked at 69, with 2009's "Us," a return to more traditional forms of hip hop, reaching 56 and 2012's "Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color," which held more political vehemence than previous records, peaked at 44.
Brother Ali is known for his outspoken political activism, focusing on themes of racial inequality, slavery, economic injustice and gay rights. His song and accompanying video "Uncle Sam Goddamn" even prompted the US department of Homeland Security to freeze financial earnings from being transferred to his label.
Live reviews
I pride myself on knowing and compartmentalizing Hip Hop artists who have a zest for capturing the crowd and continuously submerging us beneath the intellectual, personal boundaries that many in the game are fearful of leading. Straight to the heart. Straight from the heart. Which leads critics down every and any path except the one of "disingenuous". Brother Ali is a beat slaying, verbal assault rifle intent on engaging you with his wit and love for his profession. Although he is clearly a natural, his professionalism and dedication to his craft whirls you around like only a "real" to "real" could. The man is flawless with is techniques and would be able to spit in any time zone or time period. Ask yourself, "When i put my loot down - Do i want to place it on art? Or Pop routines?" Well, again, originality is what you get when you step through the doors. The presence, the flo, the rhythm, the cadence, the attitude, the heart felt appreciation for his fans…Listen some out there may think this is sacrilegious, but truly his flo is as hard as a KRS, as fluid as Black Thought, and as funky with sabor as Big Pun. Brother Ali, I know your away from the nations capital, but when you can …Please swing back through. i know you know the 930 Club…but the Black Cat, Lincoln Theatre or any set in DC would welcome you. Rhymesayers Entertainment hip hop collective member Jason Douglas Newman better known in the States by his stage name of Brother Ali has had a number of years to really perfect his live technique having first appeared in the world of hip hop in 1998. The Albino musician is completely at home onstage and speaks passionately about his beliefs, faith and politics in breaks between songs.
Inspired by the golden age of hip hop, Ali has sculpted his sound and show following on from the likes of Public Enemy and Rakim. Therefore he has a real angsty sound to his music, some of which has garnered him controversy over the years however this does seem to have phased the fanbase who continue to sing back the lyrics in force at each of his shows. He thanks them for their support, fits in one more politically charged rant and exits to the fading tones of 'Us'.
Brother Ali brings the politically potent lyricism that he puts into all his recordings onto the stage and leaves the crowd in awe of his flawless flow. There’s no denying that he is a born entertainer, and at his shows you can’t help but notice that virtually every member of the crowd is captivated and excited by his music. The live band that accompanies him transforms a standard rap show into a great live gig. Although his backing band is made up of some hugely talented musicians, Brother Ali is most definitely the star of the show. He seems very comfortable on stage and never fails to express his gratitude to all the fans that come to see him. Between tracks he engages in an entertaining and intimate back and forth with the audience, encouraging them to engage with his lyrical message. Quality hip hop, honestly staged.
This show surpassed my expectations. Sa-Roc's DJ opened up with killer tunes to get the crowd in the right mood.
Then Sa-Roc came on stage and crushed it. The vibe at the Metro in Chicago was energized, positive and uplifting.
Brother Ali came on pretty much right after and the place exploded! He was upbeat and on point throughout the entire show. He mentioned he had friends and family in the building which added to his excitement on stage. There was a healthy mix of old school tunes like "Uncle Sam Goddamn" and his latest album "All the beauty in this whole life."
Chicago loves Brother Ali and he loved us right back!
Amazing interview and show. Brother Ali is an incredibly talented story teller with an impressive and engaging vehicle to deliver his brand of socially conscious hip-hop to the people who really need to hear it. He seems humble and down to earth it was great to get to meet him briefly after the show. The venue was very neat and clean, the staff was very helpful and polite and I feel very lucky to have been apart of that unique experience!
