The Legendary Shack Shakers are everything I love about blues. They are open up your eyes to blues. They are Seasick Steve but 40 years younger. Their music is sexy, honest, soul shacking. 'Shake your hips' says everything you need to know about them.
They formed back in the 90's in Kentucky labelled under the genre of rockabilly blues. Frontman J.D. Wilkes has been compared to Iggy Pop in his live shows. He attacks the stage with his swagger, swings out the harmonica and with just enough distortion in his microphone to understand his vocals, he struts his stuff like a modern day Mick Jagger.
They're live shows continue to generate huge crowds of the rockabilly scene and rightly so. 2015 will be their 20th anniversary and they look to be introducing a new LP to us all very soon, which I'm thrilled about. Their sound has got heavier, modernise to the likes of Eagles of Death Metal but maintaining their blues heritage.
Their music will eat the girls hearts away and will make the boys cry a jealous blue howl. But they make sure everyone has a great time. Fans clap and stamp their music endlessly to the sound of The Legendary Shack Shakers.
These guys are not to be missed!
J.D. Wilkes is a talented clown. Apart from gurning vocals and manic harmonica, his physical craziness is unique.
If you are fortunate enough to see them, get right in front next to the stage - he will mess with you; he bodysurfs without any indication he's about to launch.
Rod on guitar is right up there. The drummer is kind of anonymous but excellent along with the stetson-wearing stand-up slap bass.
This is small-club live at it's best.
Catch em if you can!!
ROCK ON..........CPT
PS They tend to mingle with 'us' post-gig, easy to chat to,
Barnstorming crescendo from the Shack Shakers last night in Manchester. Started out with purposeful vim and added yodelling, blues harmonica and other layers of chaos as the set progressed. Finished with a crunchy guitar solo and then a guitar battle against Jon Wilkes' harmonica. Impossible not to feel warm all over by the end. Tap dancing by the astonishingly pretty female half of the support act was a very cool bonus.
This band is a major headliner.. I caught them two years ago in New Orleans and have not stopped talking about them.Their disks are terrific but it is seeing them live that is an experience not to be forgotten!
J.D Wilkes is one of the very best frontmen I have ever seen and I’ve seen some greats. The rest of the band are solid .hard working and tight.Do not miss the chance to catch this act if it comes your way.
Great show as always although not sure why JD thought it was a good idea to repeatedly shower his snot over the audience. Luckily we were far enough back to avoid the experience.
