Benjamin Francis Leftwich is a young singer-songwriter with an indie look, a rasping voice and an acoustic guitar. Following the release of his debut album, ‘Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm,’ in 2010, Benjamin has steadily gathered popularity and has released a further EP. So, when I found out that Leftwich was playing his hometown of York this April, I thought I’d check him out.
Ben arrived onstage with a sheepish look. He shyly thanked the home crowd for making him feel so welcome before opening with a softly sung rendition of ‘Box of Stones.’ This set the tone for the evening. Leftwich’s famous Arcade Fire cover, ‘Rebellion,’ was played in the same ilk.
During the songs, Benjamin’s crowd listened quietly. We swayed in contemplative unison; countless doe-eyed girls stared lovingly on, and a sickeningly large number of couples embraced. However, between tracks girls loudly declared their love for the Yorkshireman and, on a number of occasions, I heard the shout, ‘I want your babies.’
Leftwich’s performance suited the intimate venue. His probing lyrics and exploration of the emotional sea of early adult life, epitomised in ‘Manchester Snow’ resonated through the closely packed crowd.
The gig made for a chilled evening of acoustic-inspired contemplation.
Literally one of the nicest guys and an amazing performer. He spent a good portion of his Nashville show off of the stage and on the floor singing with the rest of the audience circled around him. Truly awesome to see a show where the artist sounds just as good live as on the album and at $12 a ticket it was super cheap. After the show he spent time signing autographs and really getting to know his fans. Ben's a legend and i can't wait to see him again. If you got $12 go see him you won't regret it
It was quite simply the best gig I've ever been to...and I've been to loads. It was such a special night with a real intimate feeling due to the venue, the number of people and the way he interacted with the audience. He did quite a few acoustic songs...and I mean acoustic without any amp! He also played a couple of songs amoungst the audience. He walked between the people and engaged fully. He made a connection to all of us and touched us for life.
Wonderful concert in a marvellous location. His beautiful voice and touching songs were inspiring and hearing him play a song without microphones and monitors was really something. That he also played an as of yet unreleased song was a treat and it was a very personal setting with a small crowed that was silently enjoying a great artist. Thanks for this immense pleasure
Very talented songwriter who makes his music seem effortless. Felt very connected to the crowd, very intimate and quaint venue. Support Act, Travis the Tourist was very funny and also very talented.
Definitely speak to Ben and Travis after the show, they were both very humble, funny and appreciative of their fans. 5 Stars!
Brilliant gig and so personal. Loved the setting, the venue and the music. I was standing at the in the middle and it felt like he was playing for me. He came off the stage a few times and played to us in the crow which was lovely. Really had the room hanging onto every word. Beautiful music. Definitely go see him again.
Wow, he is awesome! I love his voice and his lyrics. Great combination. I appreciate when a musician actually interacts with the audience and that he did! He even came off stage to sing to the audience and get them to sing along with him. Great guy that I know will go far!
Just Amazing! A combination of old, new and unreleased songs. Incredible venue, Benjamin came and sung acoustically to the audience several time.
Amazing artist, so humble and thankful to his fan base.
The supporting singer Fawn was good too.
