Biography
Strongly influenced by her parents’ free-spirited approach to life and parenting, Ford co-founded the alt-country band, The Be Good Tanyas, in 1999. Calling Vancouver, British Columbia home, The Be Good Tanyas began honing their live-performance skills towards the tail end of the century and played their debut North American tour in 2000. From the year 2000 to 2006 Ford released three albums with the group, “Blue Horse” (2000), “Chinatown” (2003), and “Hello Love” (2006). The latter two releases comfortably landed on the Canadian Albums Chart, aided by the singles “It’s Not Happening” and “Scattered Leaves”.
In 2008 the band embarked on a hiatus with members pursuing their own musical interests and collaborations. Two years later Frazey Ford would release her debut studio album “Obadiah”, recorded alongside The Be Good Tayas’ Trish Klein. Featuring heartfelt, wavering vocals, the record highlights Ford’s more soulful influences and earned a string of positive reviews from the likes of Pitchfork Media.
Following the release, Ford returned to performing with The Be Good Tanyas in 2011 beginning with a well-received show at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. The band subsequently released a best-of compilation in 2012 entitled “A Collection”, following which Ford focused on recording her sophomore solo album. Released in 2014, Ford’s second studio album “Indian Ocean”, is marked by more Americana, country tones than its predecessor, however received similarly rave reviews.
Live reviews
Tonight’s setting is very intimate with people sitting around tables, the room is lit by candles and Canadian, Frazey Ford makes her way to the centre of the stage with her guitar in one hand. There is a hefty amount of applause from what is a congregation of about 100 at the very most.
Her set this evening is in promotion of her latest release, entitled “Indian Ocean”, but before she performs the new songs, she has to give it her all and ease in this atmosphere playing some of her older stuff to re engage this audience who most of which have actually seen her before. The vibe here is fantastic and very intimate, with a rule that when people are singing, everyone has to be polite other wise they get thrown out without warning. When fore plays, she is similar to Joni Mitchell with that kind of conviction and use of her upper register falling in and out of her falsetto voice. “I Like You Better” is a great song for this audience to get into, with enough audience participation to make them feel involved. Ford eventually jumps in the deep end playing some brand new material in the form of her new album “Indian Ocean” the title track receiving a fantastic amount of applause.
I caught the first of 2 sold out shows in Vancouver recentl. The concert was great with Ms. Ford showcasing her latest album Indian Ocean, and earlier music mixed in. The band was a little stiff, and could benefit from the opportunity to step and shine a little. Has anyone told Frazey that her back up singer Debra Jean Creelman tries to steal the show with attention getting moves? Really detracted from our experience of the performance.
Had a lovely time with friends at St Lukes watching Frazey Ford! My girlfriend got me into her with the Be good Tanyas and I’ve enjoyed the music since! Voice was top notch and good rapport with the audience. Didn’t understand why there was this big barrier in front of the stage though... pushed everyone way back and I was stuck quite far back! Didn’t distract me per se just thought odd! Nonetheless a great night!
