Live reviews
Dublin, March 2016.
I went to this gig with high hopes having great enjoyed most of her back catalogue. Unfortunately, it felt like being at a glorified karaoke, with Molly alone on a bare stage singing along to a backing track played through the PA. Fair enough that it is electronic music, but even Jon Hopkins, Darkside Kiasmos, etc. manage to recreate their much, much more complex electronic music live on-stage. It meant that the whole thing felt a bit robotic, and not in a good, Kraftwerkesque (Kraftwerkistisch?) way. Coupled with the fact that she spent so much time (about 30 minutes in total) waffling between songs (and it was waffle, sorry) that she didn't even have time to finish her setlist, this particular punter came away disappointed and will only be listening to Molly from the comfort of his sitting room in future.
I saw Molly in Barcelona at Sala Upload,it was the first time in my life that i leave concert in the middle and it's the first time that i am writing a negative review for an artist.
This was the definition of boring.
I was not prepared for this karaokee style live and that was not the worst part.
Why you choose to play 10 songs in the beginning from your last album?
Her voice is amazing but performance on stage below average, her attempt also to get close to the audience by explaining for each song where the inspiration came from didnt make the things better.
If you're a fan go for it as i saw a lot of people that they were really enjoy it,otherwise enjoy Molly from comfort of your stereo.
shame cause i had high expectations for this live.
I'm so surprised by the reviews here...! Molly Nilsson's concert I've seen in 2019 was one of my favorites and I can't wait to see her again. The fact that she doesn't play really didn't bother me at all, on the contrary, I felt like it's a waste of time trying to "prove" that you can play those songs, that you 100% produced. There's a lot of layers to her songs so really playing one synth part on stage when there's like 40 playing from a computer (because no band can play that) is totally pointless to me. And I really liked her little talking and anecdotes. I don't know, i must be crazy, but to me it was a great concert.
10/25/18 - Elsewhere Zone One, Brooklyn, NY
This was really boring. I love her music and recordings but she was not an entertaining solo performer. She sings along with a backing track and there's next to nothing in the way of stage banter or audience engagement.
A prior review mentioned that it's like watching karaoke, but I've seen much more entertaining karaoke performances.
It was as expected, cold, dark, sharp as a razor and sublime at the same time. One song after the other was just tearing up my flesh and I liked it.
When she sang "I'm still wearing his jacket" I melted, we all did. What a superb night, and at the best possible location with the best possible sound, almighty Berghain. It was fucking awesome.
I saw her live for the first time at The Garrison in Toronto and I was pretty underwhelmed. It was just her singing karaoke to her MacBook... that was it... Her vocals were fine but I was hoping for more.
