Ever since breaking through as part of the nu-folk movement of the late noughties - emerging out of London, the likes of Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons and Noah and the Whale brought pop sensibilities to a largely acoustic, folk-rooted sound - Emmy the Great has been pretty much synonymous with the classic notion of the singer-songwriter; confessional lyrics, simple instrumentation, and tons of conviction in the way she sings. On debut album First Love, Emma Lee Moss tackled fatal car crashes, unplanned pregnancy and a whole heap of failed relationships ins startlingly honest fashion, marking her out as one of the country’s finest young songwriting prospects. She continued to surprise on follow-up Virtue, too; song titles like ‘Dinosaur Sex’ and ‘In the Afterglow of Rapture’ should tell you all you need to know about the continuation of her taste for the abstract, but the much more polished sound of the album marked her out as an impressive musician, too. Her live shows, though, remained fairly stripped-back, her live band only offering fairly simplistic backing to allow the quality of her songs to come to the fore. She’s promised new material on Facebook recently, so new live dates should follow quickly.
What a fantastic show!
Wonderful session with Emmy, who was an ever so welcoming and gracious host and spent time both before and after the show.
Music itself was fantastic with a good mix of classics and her new and Mandarin material that got us all rocking together, including a singing session (with word sheets) for us all to do together.
The supporting acts, O Karmina and CYTA were also fantastic and provided both excellent music and a fun atmosphere when playing individually and with Emmy as part of the whole band.
The total experience was fantastic and I can't wait to go to another show soon!
Best performance I've ever seen from Emmy. She clearly had a great time, chose some great songs and was having fun interacting with the crowd.
I have huge respect for her because she is willing to take chances - such as taking a request for Trellick Tower which she hadn't practiced and being game enough to risk failing (she didn't).
She also benefited from the support bands (or better described as a collective) - it worked really well. They did their stuff first - 2 artists - and then were her band for her show. Really great!
Our third time seeing Emmy at the Deaf Institute and she never fails to please. Such a lovely voice and an ethereal persona , beautifully supported by her band. She also had time for her audience at the end. Can't wait for the new album and hope she comes back and plays in Manchester soon
Beyond my expectations, she has a beautiful voice live, plays the instruments by herself and is able to talk to you, tell you a little about her and her music. Also the other fans going made me feel very comfortable, they all had a good vibe. It was definitely an amazing experience.
Awesome concert with favorites & songs from the new album. Great so see Emma's multi-talented abilities in a live environment. this had a very hometown feel with friends and family in the audience. Also a shout-out for Jeff the guitarist. The Chapel is a great venue for her.
So glad I went! Emmy has the audience's full attention throughout her warm, engaging set. My favorites are "Swimming Pool" and "Dinosaur Sex." The backlit screen was a nice visual touch.
Only complaint is that she didn't play longer!
