You have to see Fool’s Gold live if you ever get the chance. I had the unexpected pleasure of seeing them live last New Year’s Eve with Daedelus at Grand Park in Los Angelea, California. I had no idea who they were going in, but I ended up having to go out and buy both of their albums after seeing their performance. I am not sure what genre of music they fall into, because they mix in the traditional African drum rhythms and vocals with modern American-style rock and pop music.
It is hard to describe this fusion of music, but it is fast, entertaining, and easy on the ears. The set was not fancy when I saw them, but it did not need to be. These guys are about making interesting, good music, and it shows. When the band took the stage the crowd was kind of disinterested and was chatting.
As soon as they opened up and started playing a song called “The Dive,” everyone began to take notice. The drugs and other percussion instruments caught everyone’s attention and then Luke Topp, the lead singer, started in with the vocals, which have an African-style cadence, everyone’s attention was fixed on the stage.
I would gladly go see this band again, and I recommend that everyone give them a chance. Their show was a perfect, high energy way to ring in the New Year.
