When Trent Reznor launched How to Destroy Angels in 2010, we had no reason to believe that this wasn’t the project that would be taking up the majority of his attentions for the foreseeable future; after all, he’d made quite the show of putting Nine Inch Nails to bed, touring the world extensively as part of a jaunt titled ‘Wave Goodbye’ and then selling off all of the band’s gear in high-profile fashion once the shows were over. Later, though, he’d return to his ‘day job’ with NIN, releasing a new record, Hesitation Marks, last year and touring heavily, putting HTDA, his project with his wife Mariqueen Maandig, firmly on the back burner.
Whilst they were a going concern, though - we can safely assume them to be on hiatus for now - they made one, well received record, Welcome Oblivion, and played typically stunning live sets; what else do you expect from Reznor? Both the sonic experimentation and dazzling visual side of their appearance at Coachella in 2013 were standard for a man who insists on putting on consistently thrilling live shows; the YouTube footage is well worth checking out, because for now, that’s all we’ve got, at least until NIN go quiet again.
