Biography
Garden State-native Dray, a.k.a. Andre Weston, and Brooklyn, New York City-born Skoob, a.k.a William Hines, first met whilst studying at Virginia State University. Following a period of honing their skills and performing live in local clubs and bars, Das EFX entered a local talent show, and ultimately signed with the popular group EPMD’s label. The duo’s debut output, the 1992 album “Dead Serious”, made waves upon release, earning widespread critical acclaim. The album’s intense pace, epitomised by the duo’s often nonsensical, stream-of-consciousness delivery, proved to be a highly influential, original release. Peaking at No. 16 on the Billboard 200, the album earned platinum certification, aided by the singles “They Want EFX”, “Mic Checka”, and “Straight Out the Sewer”.
The duo subsequently appeared on the Ice Cube hit single “Check You Self”, before being forced to change their lyrical delivery, due to the saturation of that style in the hip hop climate. As a result Das EFX’s sophomore album was a much slower, less playful affair, which alienated some of their earlier fans. Reaching No. 20 on the Billboard 200, the record earned positive reviews, supported by the singles “Freakit”, “Baknaffek”, and “Kaught in da Ak”.
In 1995 Das EFX issued their third full-length album “Hold It Down” to disappointing sales and critical reviews. Caught in the midst of EPMD’s breakup meant the duo were unable to release any new material until 1998, which saw the studio album “Generation EFX” hit the shelves. The full-length “How We Do” followed in 2003, which like its predecessor was unable to match the success of previous albums, and the duo became a regularly-performing cult act.
Live reviews
Rappers Dray and Skoob came together in the early 90s to form Das EFX and little did they know they would end up influencing and affecting the hip hop genre in such a noticeable manner. With a fast paced performance style and a razor sharp view on political and social issues, they became a voice on the underground and their early shows in Virginia became packed out with avid fans.
Little has changed over the years as the group is still attain a cult following and they still attract huge numbers of followers to their performance. There is an attraction in seeing if the pair can keep up with the sheer speed of their recorded material which of course they can without issue. There has not been any new material in a number of years yet as the band's early stuff appeared so frequently on the US rap charts it would seem that the group has enough killer material in the discography to keep the fans coming again and again. The whole room is bouncing to 'Mic Checka' and 'Freakit' before 'Straight Out the Sewer' brings the whole house down as the rappers exit the stage whilst the bass is still pounding through the venue.
Das EFX is a hip-hop duo from Virginia, U.S.A made up of the Krazy Drayz and Skoob, both extremely accomplished artists in their own right with an incredible flow to match. They’ve been doing their trade for the best part of twenty years since they met at Virginia State University releasing five studio albums; they’ve kept doing what they do over the time maintaining a real positive air about it.
When they perform live, the buzz is simply electric, with hordes of hip-hop enthusiasts lapping up the amazing, sometimes dubbed as unusual rapping style that is Das EFX. Some such as “They Want EFX” which was statistically their biggest single make this audience absolutely loose it, keeping them bouncing along to the beat inviting them to join in where they wish. “Microphone Master” is a true demonstration of just what this pair can do with and audience. The way the command the audience throughout their set is fantastic, and somewhat inspirational.
