Biography
In 2009 Sky signed a recording contract with Parlophone after gaining attention in the industry following her works in film and modelling before turning her hand to music. Her first single 'One' made the singer's first chart appearance over seas where it placed at #64 on the UK Single charts. 'Obsession' shortly followed and was a moderate success on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart, appearing at #37.
'As If!' was her first EP released in 2011 and Sky collaborated with huge producer Greg Kurstin for tracks such as '99 Tears'. It was a critical success and Ferreira's reputation as a new voice in pop music grew. After the next EP 'Ghost' was released which featured cult hit 'Everything Is Embarrassing' the stage was set for Ferreira to release an anticipated debut album.
'Night Time, My Time' came out in November 2013 and had a more indie rock style as opposed to some of the early music. It wasn't a huge commercial breakthrough, however it did become Sky's first appearance on the US Billboard chart at #45. It also broke the top 100 of the UK album charts. In November 2014 she supported Miley Cyrus on her 'Bangerz' tour around the country, only briefly having to miss dates due to falling offstage and splitting her shin open.
Live reviews
I saw Sky Ferreira perform during her stint as opening act on Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz tour and I was absolutely blown away by her performance. She appeared on stage as a very slight figure, with her radiant peroxide hair and dressed down in a casual T shirt and tight skirt with studded boots. But as soon as she opened her mouth I knew that we were in for a treat. She has such a distinctly raspy, rocky voice and appeared wonderful indie, both in style and sound. I was surprised to come across her at a Miley Cyrus concert, known for its outlandish gimmicks and general craziness, when Ferreira appeared so laid back and understated. Accompanied by two guitarists only, Ferreira needed no gimmicks or flashy lights to compel the crowd. Her voice did all the work. She sang the magical and emotional ‘Sad Dream’, ’99 Tears’ and her biggest and most popular hit ‘Everything is Embarrassing’ which got a standing ovation from the crowd, who absolutely loved her and seemed enchanted by the petite blonde.
Sky Ferreira was magical on stage. Coming on to the screams of the crowd at Williamsburg Music Hall, she proceeded to give a single flower to a fan in the front row (forever jealous). Her voice was even more incredible live, she was sweet and funny and everything you could want from an artist. The highlight of the show was probably 'Sad Dream' - getting emotional on stage, Sky was forced to stop for a couple of lines to wipe her eyes, in which time the crowd screamed out the lyrics which she was unable to sing. Laughing through her tears, she exclaimed 'I'm so embarrassed' which was met by the screams of the crowd and many 'I love yous' being sent her way. Her entire performance was heart wrenching, sad and soft through the heavy rock beats. Probably the best concert I've been to this year.
