as always, the supersuckers came to "rock your ass." and rock they did - though, they did not play that signature song. they also passed over another classic, "rock 'n' roll records (ain't selling this year)." i've seen the band a half dozen times and this was the first time they skipped either track. but the lack of either song did not keep the show from being a monster event.
Most bands touring behind a new album may play one or two of the new songs. not these guys. they started the show by rocking through five straight songs off the new disc, "get the hell" - then played a few more for good measure later. with tracks like "f*** up," "pushin' thru" and the title track, it's easy to see why the new album warrants so much stage time this tour and for future tours as well.
Of course other standards like "bad bad bad," "goodbye," "pretty f***** up" and "born with a tail" were well received by the sparse crowd at the gas monkey. this was the first time i've seen the band outdoors and though it was a bit chilly, the show was a blast.
The highlight for me was the pseudo-country medley in the middle of the show consisting of "creepy jackalope eye," willie nelson's "bloody mary morning" and "roadworn and weary." last time i saw those tracks played live they were played fully country instead of rockified.
They proclaim to be the greatest rock 'n' roll band, and when the supersuckers play a set riddled with this many rock songs it's easy to see why. if you get the chance to see these guys, take it, you won't be disappointed.
‘How’s everyone doing, we’re the Supersuckers and we’ve come here tonight to rock the house’ was the first thing that sounded over the incredible sound system in the black out before the lights came up and the rock band ran on stage with their arms in the air to take their positions with their instruments. Although the band are relatively cocky, having dubbed themselves the ‘greatest rock band in the world’, they almost justify it with the incredible and enthusiastic set they played.
The show opened with Dan Bolton performing an epic guitar solo whilst Eddie Spaghetti called over the top to the audience introducing the band and their set before they launched straight into She’s My Bitch/Drinkin’ N Drivin’. They immediately had the audience on their side, and it seemed like everyone was long time fans, singing along to every track, and dancing around in appreciation for the band.
Although the vocal performance wasn’t as strong as it once might have been, the instruments were solid, and the was that the guitars and drums intertwined and also battled with each other was exciting to see in a live performance. Their improvisations were also great to witness, and it was awesome to see something live that you can’t experience on the recording studio albums.
I love the Supersuckers and have been lucky enough to see then 4 times prior to this gig, the first time just over 15 years ago, they are loud, but the sound at Audio was terrible and ruined what should have been a top gig, the set list was full of old songs, well apparently, as sometimes the sound was so bad they could have been playing anything.
Whoever was doing the sound evidently decided just turn everything up, I've got tinnitus anyway so wear earplugs, but these were no match for the wall of noise, I wish I had left now as I considered doing as now 4 days later the increased ringing has not subsided...
If I get the chance I'll see the Supersuckers again, but I'm never going to Audio again, which is a shame as it seems a nice wee venue
look, these guys come to rock that ass every time they step on stage. and this gig was no exception. sure the crowd was small - wednesday nights usually are - but it didn't stop the band from electrifying the fans.
seeing the entire "the evil powers of rock 'n' roll" should be enough. should be, but nope, this band always gives you more. kicking off with a good chunk of the previous album ("suck it") was cool since i had to miss that tour. then came the aforementioned "evil powers" set. next came an audience request portion that spanned the band's 30 year career and included a tune from the upcoming album. you really do get more at a supersuckers show.
I have been a fan since 1990. They did not disappoint! Younger Okies who may not have been long time followers - will be now!!! Supersuckers rock like no one else! I’m slightly bummed that there weren’t more people there but, like Eddie said, “you are the true fans of great rock”! Yep!
