Hayseed Dixie may be the only band to be members of the genre Rockgrass, so you really shouldn't miss the opportunity to see this bizarre, boisterous live act. Looking as every part the hillbilly as you would imagine, the band cover classic rock in such an individual way they get audiences toe tapping to songs they know, but are reimagined entirely.
The band have currently released nine albums, having originally started as an AC/DC tribute band in the States, the boys quickly realised there was demand for re-imagining rock in this jovial manner so moved on to cover legendary artists including Queen, Aerosmith and Kiss. These cover versions are received so well at their live shows, and the more the audience dance and cheer, the more energy the four performers throw into each song.
By the finale of their sets, and the final banjo chords of Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid' have been plucked, the whole room are left as a sweaty, jug tooting, knee slapping mess yet it is just the most fun. Nowhere else are you going to see tracks such as these so ingeniously interpreted and there's just something so crazy about square dancing to 'Don't Stop Believing' yet you seem to leave inhibition on entry and become as involved as the four musicians onstage. The band will return to UK shores in January, so if you're looking for a night of madness and fun soundtracked by banjos, get tickets now.
I've seen Hayseed Dixie 4 times in 4 years. This gig gig at Gloucester Guildhall was sublime. Excellent musicianship well rehearsed songs and an entertaining stage show. Although the personal line changed last year, the banjo and mandolin players, now both British, play as well as the previous Americans and actually contribute more to the stage show. I particularly enjoyed the "Austrian drinking song" during which was delivered a blistering banjo solo. I can't describe it, words in my opinion would not do it justice.
Ok, so you don't get the big production put on by the likes of The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac etc but then you don't pay inflated ticket prices and have to travel long distances to get to the gig.
To sum it up, Hayseed Dixie are a fine band well worth the entrance fee.
I had only seen one video about three years ago and thought it was a good chuckle. Then they came to my attention again and every comment on the youtube video was ecstatic about their live performances and telling you to go if you can.
Well I could.
And I did.
And i will absolutely do so again.
And you should too!!!
They cover so many styles of music and inject it all with mountain-man energy and hillbilly humour. So funny. So much fun. So many attendees in trucker caps and checked shirts ... but every other kind of fan as well. I wish bands like this would do a double-loop so that I could go again in a couple of weeks and TAKE MORE FRIENDS to enjoy it too.
