My wife and I were initially very excited for the GLJ show in Denver last night. Excitement turned to frustration as we ended up waiting 3 hours for the band to play 10:32pm start, doors opened at 7:30pm.
The first opening band (Plague Garden) was a one year old Denver band that sounded okay; a lot like Joy Division. The second band (Red Winged Blackbird) was a member of the first band with a guitar and background track. Painful.
Twin GLJ founders Michael and jay split up, so we got one of the founders and his son. The other twin is doing his own GLJ tour, so beware! Hopefully the other tour is better than what we saw last night.
After three hour wait, Jay rambled on about coronavirus and he hoped he’d kill all of the 25 fans in attendance. Then he went into a socialist rant. I hate it when musicians think we care about their beliefs. PLAY THE DAMN SONGS WE CAME TO HEAR! They played a bunch obscure crap that we’d never heard. Left after they played Jealous.
9/9/18 NYC - Great show!!! They did a good mix of old and new songs and projected a lot of energy on stag.
The show was at The Cutting Room, a smallish but very nice venue that has seating (with tables) only. I think many of us wanted to get up and dance, but as is generally the rule for these types of places, most of us remained seated so as to not block other patrons seated behind us. What was cool was that the band was downstairs afterwards, so on the way to the restroom, fans got to talk to them and take pictures. They were very gracious.
The only other time I saw Gene Loves Jezebel was in 1989 at the Ritz (NYC), with "Until December" as their opening act. I'm glad I got the chance to see them again. I hope they plan to return to NYC again -- we fans will be waiting to give them another warm welcome.
Jay Aston is a true performer...The set was tight and they sounded great. If you get a chance to see Jay's version of Gene Loves Jezebel, do it, you won't be disappointed.
