Australian artist Josh Pyke has a real knack for narrative. His songs tells rich, vivid stories that you find yourself getting wrapped up in, feeling genuine empathy for his many characters and personalities. All told in a haze of dreamy acoustic guitar and the occasional spat of orchestral violin. Unlike large swathes of contemporary folk acts, Pyke's lyricism tells relatable stories of modern life. His songs invite you into his world, they have something to show you. His performances mirror the theme. A real crowd pull, whether performing at small, intimate affairs or big name festivals, Pyke manages to sing directly to you. He knows how to interact with the crowd, and offers up a healthy balance of older tracks and new releases. Expect to hear the satisfaction in the crowd as the first chords to 'middle of the hill' or 'the lighthouse song' start strumming away over the audiences heads, and a devoted fan-base keeps in time with the lyrics, followed by exalted screams as he gets underway with 'make you happy'. He manages to keep the balance between the feel-good and the thought provoking in his performances, and leaves you feeling fulfilled and wholesome, more so than any life-coach or guru could hope to do.
