Blissed-out psychedelic twosome from London, Paradise, are pretty new on the scene, but they’re already making waves with their droning garage sound. It’s straight-down-the-line simple, it’s a bit surfy, it’s pretty dirty – sparing excesses where possible when it comes to production - and there are some cracking licks on the organ to boot. They’ve just had a new LP come out, Soldiers of the Modern Age, and that’s exactly the image they cast, Spartans for the simple chord-based ethos.
Who actually cares that it sounds like the Von Bondies, The Dirtbombs, MC5, The Gories, Rocket Science, The Black Keys, The Vines, The Subways, Wolfmother et cetera, et cetera? It’s got spirit, radiance, energy and they smash a live set, leaving the entire sweaty party literally gagging for an encore. If years and years of progression from the chain-gang blues through the dispersion of white man’s rock’n’roll into the garages of young Keith Moon-worshipping upstarts has taught us anything it’s that simplicity works. If you’re keen for a rollicking good time, some throwback garage stylings and lager in plastic cups, Paradise will provide.
