Maribou State are made for the pulsing club circuit, with upcoming shows with Fatboy Slim and The 2 Bears at Warehouse Project, at the Ministry of Sound and at the well-established Watergate superclub in Berlin. They’re the international discotheque trailblazers that will make everyone’s night from Brooklyn to Brighton to Ibiza to the glowstick parties of Croatia and Romania. Their shadowy, eclectic minimal-house sound resembles that of Pantha Du Prince, Modeselektor or Shackleton. They understand what it means to be laconic, using subtle shifts in tempo and gradually overlapping samples to create a kind of mutating ambience that’s deceptively complex.
Their debut EP blended sub-tropical percussion and symbols with intercut, soulful vocal tracks to create a perambulating, worldly sort of nu-jazz, with appearances from Saint Saviour on ‘Scarlet Groove’ and Pedestrian on ‘Rush Don’t Run’. Their subsequent Eps Native and Truths have a more haunting atmosphere about them. Their live tracks fuse all their widely-sourced jams together seamlessly. As a point of reference, check their Boiler Room set, which flails wildly between Afro-jazz, bossanova, minimal, coldwave and funk in the first half-hour.
Dear Maribou State,
I was very disappointed by the set you played yesterday at Baby's All Right.
I do understand that nowadays, sets are more of a tool to promote your music. However, your set yesterday made me reconsider your music altogether. I feel it was not curated at all in the sense that the transitions between each song were not accurate, sometimes even brutal.
To conclude, I would urge you to keep making music in the studio -- I really do like your music, which is the reason why I was curious to see you playing a DJ set in the first place -- but please rehearse them beforehand.
Very best,
An avid listener and concertgoer
The original members of Maribou State were great! I have to admit that I was disappointed that Holly Walker was not singing with them.
Although the new singer can sing, it's just not the same. I enjoyed the songs when it was only Maribou State vs. the songs when there was live female singing.
I hope that Holly joins them again. Her voice jives with their grooves better and makes the songs that she sings in.
These guys are really good live. Their singer, Holly, is brilliant as well. I am relatively new to their music, but I had an amazing time at the show. Definitely one of my favorite artists to see now!
The venue wasn’t super packed, it was the right amount of people. Sound was good and the band was super energetic. It was a memorable night and I would like to go to this venue again.
Great live performance with a choir, singers and 4 strings. Wonderful location and a great atmosphere. Would have preferred it if all the singing was live as some was prerecorded.
I HAD SO MUCH FUN! Loved the group before the show, and even more now that it's over.
Maribou State is a very talented group. Had a blast and will definitely see them again.
Maribou State was so good live. Lincoln Hall was a perfect venue for them to be at too. Sound was great. Can't wait for them to come back to Chicago!
