Seven Lions, real name Jeff Montalvo, is an American record producer and DJ from Santa Barbara, California. Born in 1987, the dubstep and chillstep DJ has released three EPs since 2012.
Musical since the age of seven, Jeff Montalvo actually grew up playing the drums and making punk music. He played with many bands but eventual frustration with band members and delays in the music making process caused him to strike out on his own and experiment with electronic music. As he began to take his craft more seriously and release music, Montalvo chose the name Seven Lions, which was taken from the children’s book “Latro in the Mist”.
Seven Lions really began making waves in 2011 when he started releasing remixes of artists such as Delirium, Above & Beyond and Paul Van Dyk. One remix of “You Got to Go” by Above & Beyond went to number two on the Beatport Dubstep Chart. This track won the DJ a lot of attention and he was soon signed to Skrillex’s OWSLA label to release his first EP.
This EP was “Days to Come” and it quickly shot to the number two spot on the iTunes Dance Chart, went to number one on Beatport and was a top 10 hit on the Billboard Dance Chart. After Seven Lions’ work received radio airtime from DJs such as Britain’s Zane Lowe, the DJ’s profile elevated substantially.
In 2014, Seven Lions’ star continued to rise when the DJ released his third EP, “Worlds Apart”. The record went to number two on the US Billboard Dance Chart and the single of the same name hit the 141 spot on the UK singles chart. The “Worlds Apart” EP featured singers Ellie Goulding and Kerli, with the tracks focussing more on the content of the song rather than the beat itself.
Seven Lions claims to be influenced by Viking metal; it is a style that he listens to frequently and that inspires him. A regular performer at festivals, Seven Lions has made DJ appearances at SXSW, Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Zoo and Ultra Music Festival, amongst others.
Read moreI have watched Seven Lions grow from an incredible opener for the likes of Porter Robinson, Krewella, and Excision in 2013 to a must-see headliner for his very own Worlds Apart Tour in 2014 that is taking the electronic music world by storm.
Every time I see his name on a lineup, I know I am going to hear something amazing, moving, and majestic. Seven Lions makes mind-opening music, taking elements that are worlds apart and fusing them into tracks that are as effortless as they are unique.
Hauntingly beautiful, the deep bass and minor tones of his music keep you on edge while enchanting vocals and ethereal progressions leave the world behind. His shows consume the audience with a captivating blend of trance and bass that prove he is one of most skilled and creative producers in the industry.
Like a fantasy novel, the rich detail of Seven Lions’ sound creates an alternate universe for the audience to marvel at and explore. From his unforgettable track “Days to Come” to his eerie and stirring remix of Tritonal’s “Still with Me,”
Seven Lions has always added a powerful texture to his music, one of longing but also one of inspiration. Becoming ever more popular, he has not lost this touch; tracks off his most recent Worlds Apart EP such as “Nepenthe” continue to combine chilling melodies with intense beats.
Jeff Montalvo is better known professionally as Seven Lions is an American record producer, remixer, instrumentalist and DJ who can pretty much turn his hand to most things as long as it is related to the genres of Dubstep and Electro. At a height of just 5"8, Jeff relies on the visuals and lights to really make an impact but despite his short stature he still makes himself seen from behind the decks and encourages the audience to jump along as he dances to some of his own personal remixes and his hand selections of the best electronica tracks of the moment.
The crowd is more than obliged to get involved as they jump in unison in time to the pulsing 'The Truth' and fan favourite 'Fractals'. It is the way in which Seven Lions merges his own work with other tracks that really keeps the pace going all night and the energy just does not seem to drop despite both performer and audience dancing for upwards of two hours. Everybody is having such a great time that when it is time for a finale, the crowds seem genuinely disappointed despite their exhausted feet.
Incredible show! Amazing sound for live performance. So many other DJs drown out their sound with too much base but Seven Lions manages to get amazing sound quality across the board. You can hear EVERYTHING and it's freaking awesome! On top of that he takes you on a journey using the lyrics and video telling a story at the same time. The visuals we're fascinating! I couldn't help but freeze a few times to just stare at the screen and be completely absorbed into the images and story. This is absolutely one of the BEST live shows I have ever seen. I can't wait to see him again!! Oh, and he's so hot!!!!
Considering Jeff is a producer of melodic dubstep/house, I expected a fairly heavy set. He did not disappoint. I was at illenium the week before and the bass at this show was comparably harder. I was taken aback slightly by the amount of hardstyle/psytrance he played but it was very enjoyable and the crowd loved it.
The venue was great and the different levels with individual rails allowed for a lot of headbanging. Security was a little lax as far as unruly patrons and drug use but otherwise it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended.
Seven Lions, small night club, 200-300 people, if that, awesome night. Took a couple of hours of some fairly cheerless deep house, before we got to see Jeff, but when we did, he was great. Caught up with his music about 5 months ago and it really engaged. Not all EDM acts are as engaging in real life. Jeff was brilliant. A real mix of songs and styles. Sound quality was fantastic. Just wish it could have gone on longer
BLOWN AWAY by his performance and set list! He came on right at 10:30pm and left at about 12:15am in Dallas. Perfect length for a show. His visuals were ABSOLUTE INCREDIBLE! Hard to look away. One of my favorite electronic acts for sure. Just got into his music last year but I am SOOO happy I got to catch him this year in Dallas!!!!!!!
The show was absolutely fantastic. The choice of openers perfectly segued into the main act and Seven Lions brought down the house. I kept wanting to close my eyes to enjoy the music but the graphics were so entrancing that I couldn't look away. Each segment told a story and for perfectly with the music. A++, will see again!
AWESOME! <3 <3 The show was amazing. The visuals were incredible and Seven Lions remixed some dope beats and played all of their top songs. Their show was set when the sunset so the experience was even better because half of the show was with sunlight and the other half was during the nighttime.
Absolutely amazing show! The sound was great, the visuals were great, and you could tell that Seven Lions loves what he does. He was vibing with thr crowd so well. Pretty sure he had my favourite EDM set I've ever seen! If you have the chance to see him, you better not miss it.
I was absolutely blown away! Definitely one of the better EDM shows I've seen. The set was absolutely unique and amazing. The sound quality was perfect. Anyone who is thinking of going to see him don't miss your chance. It's something you have to experience for yourself!
