Biography
KC and the Sunshine Band released the singles “Blow You Whistle” in 1973 and “Sound Your Funky Horn” which would go to 27 and 21 in the singles chart, earning the band enough recognition to warrant recording a second album. The eponymous album came in the form of a chart topping success, only to be later certified 3x Platinum in the US alone. It reached number 4 in the US charts and the top 10 of Australia, Canada and the Netherlands. The album featured the hit singles “That’s the Way (I Like It)”, “Get Down Tonight” and “Boogie Shoes”, the former two reaching number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100.
The band’s fourth studio album “Part 3”, released in October 1976, achieved similar success to their eponymous album, managing 3x Platinum certification, and featuring three hit singles, including “Shake Your Booty”, “I’m Your Boogie Man” and “Keep It Comin’ Love”. The first two made it to number one in the Hot 100 Chart whilst the latter made it to number 2. By popular demand, it was reissued in 2006.
The band’s two following albums, “Who Do Ya (Love)”, and “Do You Wanna Go Party?” were both certified Platinum in the US, both of which charting in the Billboard 200. “Do You Wanna Go Party?” showcased the song “Please Don’t Go” which was the band’s final number one hit.
The band would continue to release albums throughout the 1980s, such as “All in a Night’s Work” which made it to number 38 in Australia, and “KC Ten” which peaked at number 93 in the Billboard 200. A ‘Best Of’ compilation album was released in 1990, and was later certified Gold.
Live reviews
For a disco-drenched night of soulful 70s pop classics, you can’t go wrong with a KC & The Sunshine Band show. The remarkable veterans of all things groovy and glitterballed are responsible for penning such golden hits as ‘That’s The Way (I Like It), ‘Get Down Tonight’, and ‘Shake Shake Shake (Shake Your Booty). Today, they’re still touring and pumping out the disco beats, even as frontman Harry Wayne Casey (‘KC’ himself) rings in his 63rd birthday.
I saw the disco-dancing troupe- the live band consists of a full brass section, lead, rhythm and bass guitars, as well as their incredibly energetic drummer and, of course, KC- at the APG Arena in Maryland last year, and the party didn’t stop until the last soul had left the venue. KC had such energy and pazzazz, and between songs was cracking jokes about his age to the crowd, a good mixture of young and old fans of the legendary soulsters. The timelessness of their music, if not the band members themselves, made the show an incredibly fun, groove-tastic experience, from the crowd-wowing opener ‘Shake Shake Shake (Shake Your Booty)’, to the still-fantastic rendition of ‘Boogie Shoes’ and even when taking a more sombre turn with a beautiful rendition of the singalong work of art that is Ben E. King’s ‘Stand By Me’, the show was a high-energy, dance-out-of-your-seat extravaganza. While KC & The Sunshine band are still touring, be sure to catch them for a decedent slice of disco history.
One of the most prolific disco, funk and R & B outfits of all time is without a doubt KC and the Sunshine Band. They have a huge amount of recognisable disco hits from across numerous decades so there is no wonder that the fanbase reach is large and varied.
People of all ages have gathered to enjoy the good vibes and easy listening tracks tonight. There is such a huge amount of energy invested into every single performance from the musicians onstage, the vocalists throw themselves into the nostalgic vibes of 'Please Don't Go' and the jovial '(Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty'. Harry Wayne "K.C." Casey is still very much at the centre of the operation and despite not being as lively as his accompanying musicians, there is no doubt he is of equal importance and you cannot detract from his legacy to the disco scene. The instrumentalists have their opportunity to shine whilst the vocalists hype up the crowd before one final sing and dance along to the timeless 'That's the Way (I Like It)' and there is no doubt every single audience member knows every single lyric word perfect.
KC and the Sunshine Band was the complete package, all that a concert goers wish for. The Band are great musicians, who individually performed fantastic solos, Thumbs up especially for the drummer who captivated the entire audience. The dancers who also sing ,were as always very entertaining and brought their high octane level performance to the stage . Thumbs up for the dancer that performed the groups rendition of brick house. KC still has a very strong voice a pleasure to watch him perform his craft. The group had the entire audience on their feet from start to finish. Kool and the Gang who closed the show , made a very big mistake by choosing three slower tempo songs to start their part of the show off and in my opinion was a big mistake. All groups Beware!!! if you ever play behind KC & the Sunshine Band, you can not come out with slower tempo material. Kool & the Gang did recapture the audience but their early selections put a momentarily damper on the show, that us fans could have done without. Kudos to KC & the Sunshine Band.
First let me state that the Palace in Greensburg is one of my favorite local venues. We've seen 4 concerts there this year and all have been great both in accommodations and sound quality. For KC & the Sunshine Band we were in the third row and the sound was never overpowering.
KC put on a great show and he doesn't sound like he's aged a bit since the late 70's. They started off with "Shake Your Booty" and the concert continued with hit after hit. Everybody was up dancing throughout the evening and the comments of the people around us were all upbeat. I hope KC returns to the area again for my wife and I will bring our "boogie shoes" and dance the night away.
The band was electrifying from start to end.....one of the greatest disco bands to ever set the stage.......As expected, they rolled out all of their catchy tunes disco songs. Overall, I had a great time at the concert. And mind you, they were NOT from my era but nevertheless, influences far spread to make me a fan of KC....great performances!
KC and the Sunshine band were great!! My second time seeing them and this was just as good if not better! The band seem like one big happy family that have been together forever and are still going strong. They sounded great and KC is 68 and phenomenal!!
