I’ll be the first person to be honest and say that I thought Elliot Brood was the name of a single artist, and not the three-piece Canadian band that it really is. The BAND consists of Mark Sasso, Casey Laforet and Stephien Pitkin, and together they play alternative country/ folk/ bluegrass music for whoever wants to listen. Each person in the band is a multi-instrumentalist with Mark Sasso on lead vocals, guitar, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, and kazoo, Casey Laforet on guitar, lead vocals, backing vocals, bass pedals, keys, and ukulele, and Stephen Pitkin on percussion, sampler, and backing vocals.
Having had the opportunity to watch their live set, I’ve really come to enjoy their sound. I’m not a big country music fan, but their songs, especially live, come off a little more folk than country. I also really enjoy listening to Mark’s vocals, because they are a bit raspy, but not in a need to clear your throat type of way. I also enjoyed watching how easily they could switch from one instrument to another, even during just one song; that’s not something you really see often, especially during a live show set. Based on the way they talked to the audience, they also seem really down to earth and humble.
Another great show by this trio (plus an occasional sit-in by a pedal steel player). Rocked more than I've seen them before, although they always put a lot of passion into their songs. In between, they are down-to-earth and personable with the crowd. The venue isn't ideal for this group, given there's a low stage and three of the four musicians sit to play, so those of us standing in front really blocked the view for everyone else, but overall a wonderful singalong, foot-stomping, hand-clapping time.
Elliott BROOD are awesome and The Ark is a great place to see any show, so quite a combination. The last two Brood shows I have been to have been very strangely poorly attended, which is terrible for them, but great for anyone who wants to go see them and get a wonderful view. Check them out!
