Two years ago my friend surprised me with tickets to a performance of Os Mutantes. I'd never heard of them, but my friend knew I loved experimental rock and that I have a fondness for classic rockers.
Os Mutantes is an awesomely weird mixed-gender group. The band has been around for years. Sergio Dias, the lead singer, is a chubby happy-go-lucky guy, who commands a spiritual and down-to-earth band and directs a performance that transcends genres. I never knew what to expect during the concert, which kept me excited and intrigued.
Seriously, it was impossible not to smile and groove the entire performance and be somewhat in awe of the complex rhythmical melody that was completely unique to Os Mutantes. Their riffs were surprising. The guitar solos were inspiring. There were times when they inspired within me such curiosity like "How did they possible come up with that arrangement?"
I don't know that much about music, but I know how to recognize beauty and artistry, and Os Mutantes is a powerful and distinct band that creates a performance like no other. They played for almost two hours, but still had enough energy to play for another four hours. I think Os Mutantes is the kind of band that exists for live performances.
What a show! Lead guitar and band leader Sergio Dias is one of the founders of the band back in Brazil in the 60's. Their music influenced many generations worldwide. What I liked the most is how well performed the songs are, very authentic to the original recordings and live shows over the years. I brought my 9 years old son and my wife and we had a lot of fun. Very recommended!
