The Drive By Truckers star is no stranger to the stage, having had a successful career with his alt country/southern rock troupe from Georgia. But Patterson Hood is equally capable of enthralling audience with his solo show, of just himself and his guitar. As one of the most engaging songwriters in America, Hood's performance was full of banter between songs, along with ample storytelling, giving great depth and understanding to his songs as well as providing endless humour for the crowd. He played many old and many new songs, also featuring a few Drive By Truckers numbers, keeping fans of his band satisfied. It was a newer song, "Grand Canyon" written for his late friend Craig Lieske, which was particularly heartfelt and emotive, having a real effect upon the crowd, who were completely captivated by his commanding stage presence. But Patterson Hood still created a positive, upbeat energy through his rousing songs. Walking on stage with a bottle of tequila in hand, he offered the front row some generous libations, which were received with uproarious enthusiasm. His performance at the State Room in Salt Lake City, Utah, was attaching, dynamic display that took you on an emotional journey through his songs. Hood is a quality performer and would definitely listen to him again.
