Bardo Pond - Corsica Studios. Intense, visceral, seismic. Just a few words I'd use to describe how mind blowing an experience their live show was last night. For those of you unfamiliar with the band, they've been around since 1991 making psychedelic styled noise/drone rock delivered at monstrous volume. The guitars turned up to 11, with hard hitting drums. Into this melting pot, add a female vocalist who alternates with playing the flute. It's a crazy combination that works surprisingly well. Their tunes tend to usually be around the 10-15 minute mark. They take you on a wonderful journey. They opened with 'Limerick', the opening track from their 1996 release Amanita, a track that begins with a repetitive plucked guitar note and mellow flute, before the guitars and drums kick in with bone crushing ferocity. The rest of the set was almost dreamlike. I don't remember what the order of the songs were. That was a testament to how powerful the music was. Bardo Pond played for nearly two hours. At the end I felt like a boxer hanging onto the ropes with nothing left - but in a good way. The only small criticism I have is that the venue was too small for a band who have a massive cult following. It was at times uncomfortable having to almost ask someone every time you wanted to move your arms, but maybe that's just me. I still have no regrets and great memories. I'm glad I finally got to see Bardo Pond.
Without Bardo Pond there would be no Mogwai, no Godspeed! You Black Emperor..etc. They were doing post rock before some lazy journalist thought of that term. If you like your music loud and love leaving a venue feeling happily shell shocked, then this is the band for you. I highly recommend them.
Please bardo find away to come to Florida and play in south Florida would love to see you guys live, been a fan for as long as you been around that im aware of...i been playing music for way long but now those days are over but need to find a great band to take my missing place of beautiful sound to make up the empty void, seen a lot of great bands in my 57 years but in todays world of great sound its far and few and impossible, im very picky don't like what the world of social media has done to the way we hear music today and theirs only a few bands that can keep the power and impact of what a band like yourself can do otherwise they just sound more like you guys do and that will never work been there done that back to only your original beautiful sound unmatched...please please make my decade and come to south Florida and blow my mind at least once before i die...thanks, hope you guys get this.
Lovely gig at the 100 Club.
Saw someone who looked like Isobel wandering around the floor pre-show and took a chance.
"Good luck tonight!"
"Thank you!!"
So it was her. Even got a chance to talk to the rest of them afterwards, really nice people, still loving their music and still helping us in the crowd to love it too.
